Sore Hoarses MkII - Now with added plans!

I like it. It looks rock-solid. Only thing I might have done differently would have been to add sacrificial strips to the top edges, so that only they get chewed up. But, I guess it also depends on how much you're going to use the saw. :)

    Belt sander uses

Is this a portable machine (where you run the tool over the wood)? Or, is it stationary (manoeuvre the wood)?

    MDF Problems

I've also had the same trouble with MDF, in the past. How far in from the outer edges of each shelf did you set your dowels? I find they usually need to be at least 40-50mm, regardless or whether you're using dowels or screws. Otherwise, it'll just split, as yours has. What's wrong with your...

    Bandsaw wheel advice

That's a good price! I had a quote from KV Rollers in South Wales and they wanted £100 (inc. VAT) for just the one 16in wheel! Hence, why I decided to re-tyre it myself... My saw's been up and running again for several months now. It cuts fine but, I know the DIY job I've done isn't...

Fantastic stuff - bet it was a nice little earner, too! :D Have you done any other woodwork in this church - like the doors, perhaps?

    Bandsaw Wheel bearing

I'd recommend you go for the rubber-sealed variety and I also recommend SimplyBearings.co.uk for both price and service. The rubber seals should prevent the ingress of dust. I did the same upgrade to most of the bearings on my previous bandsaw and they certainly outlasted the original...

    Bandsaw veneer - which blade

...In which case, one of the 4tpi Supertuff blades (as also mentioned by MikeC) should be ideal. :)

Grinding plane irons square and straight?

Yes, I used to own both and they were a bit cheaper back when I bought mine... That was until I sold my grinder and bought one of these instead! It does everything I need with ease and accuracy. My grinder setup, even with the Veritas accessories, was never this quick and easy. There's...

    Bandsaw veneer - which blade

What thickness or depth are you intending to cut? I've used one of Ian's 4tpi Supertuff blades to cut ash about 6in thick and it was literally like a hot knife through butter. 8) The finish was excellent and left me feeling confident enough to glue it straight to the MDF. But, of course; having...

toy box, soft close hinges ?

Hi Pete, I've still got a spare pair of those lid stays I bought from Rockler last year. Can't remember what sizes they are off-hand but, I'll have to have a look. Of course, whether or not these will work partly depends on the weight of the lid (...which we won't know until you've made it...

Grinding plane irons square and straight?

Do you have a table or tool rest with your grinder? Something like this. That's one of the easiest ways to get accurate and repeatable results.

Looks like an excellent saw - it's also the one I would have gone for, had I not been offered a 401e at a bargain price! If you are having trouble, do let us know (photos also help). I'm sure we'll all be able to help. If not then, you could contact Startrite directly - I've found them...

    Another feather in my hat!

Great to see both of you in this issue (...again!). Dom - I bet you never want to look at a drill again, after drilling almost five-thousand holes!! :D It does look great, though.

Oh, well. At least he can't complain if the doors do shrink or warp dramatically once the central heating comes on - he supplied the timber, after all!! :D

Where is best to sell gear ?

Paul - very sorry to hear that you're having to sell all your kit. I hope everything works out for the best, in the end. :) Will you at least be keeping a few hand and basic power tools? You're bound to come across the odd DIY jobs in the future, wherever you end up, and the kit you have now...

    Fitted Desk

Sorry - while you did say they would be painted, you neglected to mention that they were going indoors. (Although, looking at the design and possible intended applications, I now see it's quite obvious that these are going under a set of stairs...) In which case, you (well, the...

    Fitted Desk

Nice work, Chems. Glad to see you didn't try to mitre the joint between the two worktops! Now that you've made the move, when does the workshop move - and how?!? It'll need a van (or two!) all of its own! :D EDIT to add - I have mixed opinions over the use of treated timber but, in your...

Another vote for the Makita. It's also worth bearing in mind that the Bosch model is identical.

    Yandles Show

Managed to spend about an hour there shortly after lunch, having successfully collected and loaded my new pillar drill (thanks, Tim! :) ) and visited Axminster's store in the morning. While I just about managed to keep my wallet shut, I was impressed by some of the timber on offer - without...

Yep, I know the feeling! Overloaded my car twice last year - once with a load of wood for my workbench (and then some...) and again, in September, with a mortiser I bought off eBay (I was amazed to find that the exhaust stayed on all the way back from Dorchester! ;-) ). This pillar...
