    Holly form

I agree with the others - I really like the shape of the vase but I'm not convinced about the lid. I don't think it's needed. As for the colour of holly - here's another pic of just how different it can get from the normal pale, uniform cream

    Dust Extraction Advice

I use a floor standing Camvac 336. It works well enough but I wish I'd bought the double motor version for extra suction. I use it to collect dust and it's usually only on when I'm sanding as it's right next to me and quite loud (of course, the double motor would be even louder). I don't worry...

    Perform HSS Turning Tools Set

As I said in the other thread - the Perform bowl gouge isn't great. The flute is too shallow and is more like a spindle gouge. The 3 on the left are spindle gouges, the 3 on the right are bowl gouges, the one in the middle is the Perform bowl gouge. You can see that it's much closer in shape...

    Pens

All look good Malcolm. Could you please tell me which kit was used for the first pen, and where you got it. Thanks Duncan

    Turning Time in 2009

Chas - I've noticed that a lot of these bowls still have the pith in. Was the wood dry when turned so you're not worried about movement and cracking, or was it wet and there's still a possibility of movement and cracking? Duncan

    Pen kits from America

It's been pointed out to me in the past so I thought I'd better warn you - misdescribing and undervaluing imports are both illegal. This page on the customs website mentions it. Not that I'm saying don't do it, but you should be aware of possible consequences. Duncan

    Danish Oil - Self Ignition?

I was convinced that someone had experimented with this and posted a report with photos, but I can't find it. From what I recall it showed a considerable temperature increase. Duncan

    Which Digital SLR....

Paul - it's easy enough on my Konica Minolta 5D digital SLR to use it manual mode if you want to(turn mode dial to M and leave it there if that's all you want to use, set the shutter speed with a dial, set the aperture with a button and a dial, focus manually). Simple as that. I'm sure it's...

    Munro Hollower and Calipers.

Robo - I considered a laser pointer but I usually hollow with a hand held Munro tool rather than a captive system. Would a pointer work with a hand held tool? I always assumed not. I regularly stop the lathe to remove shavings anyway so measuring thickness isn't too much extra hassle. Duncan

    Munro Hollower and Calipers.

Just thought I'd update - the video where I learnt the wire depth gauge technique is ... 'Hollow Turning' by David Ellsworth he makes it very clear how to use the technique

    Hollow Form chuck advice

I use the powergrip jaws if I'm turning something heavy but these days I tend to do smaller work on the step jaws. I've even been considering getting the 45 spigot jaws for smaller work. I don't think I've ever had a problem with the wood coming loose whilst hollowing but, of course, I could...

    Christmas

Our family (all aged over 25) decided a couple of years ago not to give each other presents and I must say that it makes things a lot simpler and stress free. None of us miss it. Now we just go back to dad's and enjoy each other's company over a couple of meals and games. Things may change...

    latest bits and pieces

All great work. I really like the scalloped edges at the top of some of the forms and will try it when (if!) I remember Duncan

    Home made tools.

I've made a few... extra long articulations to go on the end of my Munro hollower - basically just short lengths of 1/2" steel bar with threaded holes to join to the main bar and attach cutting edges. One takes the small cutter holder from the Sorby multi tip scraper and one takes a tear drop...

wizer cones to play ( without his anti slope clothes ) !!!

A good series of photos. Does the shear scraping comment apply to photo 8? If so then that looks like normal scraping rather than shear.

    Mums 80th birthday present

What a great idea. Nicely done

    Critique required-piece No-8.

Not bad Paul. I like how you've kept the contrasting sap wood. As has been mentioned before the only problem I see with it is the neck (and the transition to it). The transition from bottom curve to the neck doesn't quite work for me and there appear to be a couple of flattish sections which...

    Which Digital SLR....

I'd recommend listing the features that you want (eg. anti-shake, anti-dust technologies) and then look at http://www.dpreview.com/ The buying guide on that site lets you search for cameras with different features. Not all have anti-shake built into the bodies and these need more expensive...

    Deans New Tool UPDATE

Dean - if manufacturing and distributing the tools yourself becomes difficult and not worth the time/money/effort then you could always license the design to one of the tools manufacturers. As far as I know the Sorby texturing tool is a design by Tracey Owen and he receives a fee for everyone...

    More recent turnings (by Duncan)

Thanks Pete, but it isn't a thick walled vessel - the walls are ~5mm thick throughout (but thicker at the base for stability). Or are you saying that 5mm is thick and that I should be aiming for less ;-) Yes, lignum vitae is very oily and when I've used it before I haven't even applied a finish...
