If there wasn't the giving and receiving of presents at xmas, I'd emigrate to a country that didn't recognise it. Sorry, but it's the only thing I find fun about it. This is a horrible, cold, dark time of year and I'm sure xmas was magically placed slap bang in the middle of winter to keep us all from hibernating.

Christmas was placed at its present time wizer to stop the local heathens celebrating a a different festival at this time of the year.
Not all Christians celebrate Christmas on this date either.

Sorry, I didn't want my comments to involve religion, which I guess is the real reason for Christmas and so those of us who are Atheists shouldn't partake at all.

I'd disagree with you there mate. To me Christmas is double sided, the religious side and the festive side, no requirement IMO for you to be a Christian to enjoy the festive season at all.

Oh yes,sums it up very nicely for me - the giving and receiving of presents is nice,but has been completely over-commercialised.

It seems to me it all started with the three kings giving presents...only getting a look at a child in return(Who would save us from ourselves).

Our family (all aged over 25) decided a couple of years ago not to give each other presents and I must say that it makes things a lot simpler and stress free. None of us miss it.
Now we just go back to dad's and enjoy each other's company over a couple of meals and games.

Things may change though as there's 2 nephews and a niece now on the scene...

Oh and what did you get Santa for his present?

On Christmas Eve our 4 year old declared that this year Santa was getting a pint of beer, a mince pie and a piece of her brothers birthday cake

I hate shopping at the best of times, doubly so at Christmas. The only thing that I was looking forward to was getting both sets of parents around the table for good meals and good company. Christmas dinner with the 8 of us was the best part.

The trouble with christmas presents is you have to write the b****y thankyou letters afterwards. Sorry, wrong thread!

Seriously. I think there may be too much emphasis on buying children very expensive presents. Perhaps there is a little guilt that we don't give them enough attention the rest of the year and try to make up for it at christmas. We are all so busy nowadays. Both parents usually work, the children spend a lot of time at after school clubs, nurseries etc. Dad's don't get back from work until the children are in bed. The emphasis is on income, which we use to buy extravagant presents at christmas to make up for it.
