plank clamp - no face vice

Prompted by Bugbear's solutions to clamp a plank and being as I do not have a face vice fitted, and am reluctant to do so at the moment. I adapted BB's solution and came up with these. Held in place on the bench by using the pups and dogs rather than a clamp and with the addition of a 15mm...

What's it called? - frame saw for resawing

After a good rummage in the nuts and bolts box I found a hacksaw bolt and thumbscrew which when paired up with a bolt and brass wing nut I thought would be ideal:- Well the hacksaw bolt migt have been a good ideal if I had drilled the large hole on the right side  The slot is there...

    Gates and exposed end grain

I would like to make some replacement gates and I would like to change the design in order to reduce the likelihood of rot as seen here. Why are gates typically made with the end grain of the vertical stiles open to the elements? Is it structural or aesthetic? My design (in my head only at...

    suitable timber for picnic table

Thanks John, definitely not cedar wood, I've used that before and the characteristic smell is not there. I'm off to have a look at some chestnut boards later in the week if the proce is right I will use them. Andy

    A new workshop

Stef, I've not looked for those floorboard screws over here before. The key is their "lost head" . I'd be surprised if there was not an equivalent over here from a quincaillerie perhaps? Mail order over here seems to be in the dark ages, many companies only sell to professionals (siret...

    Clifton 450 Multi-Plane

I too have a 405, my grandfathers which makes it kinda special. Although it can be a PITA to set up correctly, once set and working it is a delight to use Andy

    A new workshop

Looking good Stef. I'd be tempted to put some sort of finish (floor varnish perhaps) down on the floor. It would prevent the wood from staining if oil, paint etc is spilled. Andy

What's it called? - frame saw for resawing

Alf I love the term "relaxed mortise and tenon". One of mine is so so relaxed I had trouble waking it up :D. The old tools list is certainly a mine of information and I will admit to giving up after 15 minutes. I guess the regular contributors like its format, to me it seems a difficult to...

    A new workshop

Stef, I've read elsewhere of Tongue Tite screws being very good for fixing sold wood floorboards http://www.screwfix.com/p/tongue-tite-s ... -200/85991 Some seem to say that pilot holes are necessary to stop the tongue splitting others do not. Some suggest that screws do not allow for movement...

Is dismantleability the only reason not to glue the joints? I will try without glue but 1 of my tenons is a little loose and would undoubtably benefit from some adhesion. Andy

What's it called? - frame saw for resawing

Thanks. Using a combination of techniques from here http://www.galoototron.com/tag/frame-saw/ and here http://hyperkitten.com/woodworking/frame_saw.php3 and I think from Alf above I have started making a Resaw Frame Saw. I will use a 600mm rip blade from here...

    bow saws and frame saws

Douglas, your thread has rekindled an idea I had way back to make a frame saw for resawing, ie with the blade in the middle of the frame. I've just started another thread thinking that they may be a specific name for this type of frame saw but perhaps not. Anyway having searched around again I...

What's it called? - frame saw for resawing

Presumably the tensioning of the blade on a Resaw Frame Saw has to be done to the blade itself a bit like a conventional hacksaw. The suppliers of conventional frame saw components, AFAIK, do not seem to supply the type of hardware necessary. Unless anyone knows differently? Andy

What's it called? - frame saw for resawing

Reading Douglas' (condeestesco) thread on frame saws reminded me that I once intended to make the kind of frame saw that has the blade in the middle of the frame which is held horizontally for resawing planks and boards What is this type of saw called? Has anyone made one? Are they a viable...

    Wooden toy wheels in France

Mike, I wouldn't mind betting that sourcing pre-made wooden wheels in France will be expensive. Are you sure it's cost pro-hibitive to have them sent from the UK. I've had quick google without success. In the UK http://www.craftshapes.co.uk/item_woode ... _3_5cm.htm will delivery to france 50 x...

Stef, with the hassle you've had avoiding the cables in the concrete I can't imaging that you relish starting all over again. I too would have thought noggins would be the solution. Andy ps I've just found a scierie just the other side of Bayeux that may be of interest to you...
