Bread Makers - practical solution or a marketing exercise?

Ah bread - something they do very well over here. I have always been mightily suspicious of bread that can stay fresh for a week. We buy 4-5 loaves a week and there is never enough for a bread pudding. I had a bread machine on the wish list for xmas but it got forgotten. We do bake our own...

    Re-sawing on the table saw

I've done this too but swore I'd never do it again The riving knife on the kity is higher than the blade so had to be removed. I took it nice and slow but never felt comfortable. I'll not be adjusting the riving knife either as a deterrent to trying this again. Andy

    solar heated water costs/benefits

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. There are a number of ways to justify the accounting and it will be an interesting project and give me something to do and think about and I will get that inner glow for knowing that I am ding my bit. So I will probably give this a go. What shocked...

    solar heated water costs/benefits

I'd thought I'd start a new thread specific to my own solar heated water project. Today I've studied the costs. Our hot water is heated at night on a nighttime tariff. I think in two years I have only ever run out of water 2 or 3 times and had to heat water in the daytime. Last year our...

    Happy Bl**dy Christmas

well if we get through the channel tunnel on Thursday Christmas will be as it should with the family. Try as I might I cannot find any instances of the french TGV services failing in the same spectacular fashion as those eurostar trains - I guess it is because there are no tunnels on the TGV...

    My heating just came on.

Be careful with the draught proofing - a good flow of air is necessary to run the log burner isn't it? Log burning in a victorian semi may not have a cost benefit over gaz but in a modern well insulated house it can be worth it and the feeling of "coming home to a real fire" is worth a few extra...

PV and other alternative energy sources.

D'oh, can I have a senior moment at 47? Yes of course it's how the hot water from the boiler heats the water in the cylinder. All I'd be doing is swapping the boiler for the solar panels. I'll spend time time over christmas doing some proper costings on this. cheers Andy

PV and other alternative energy sources.

Wobblycogs ( can I call you graham? ) I think you have explained it better than me. I understand what you are saying about the flow of solar heated water to the main water heater but being as most of our hot water is used after dark it means that the water heater will be filling up with solar...

    Anyone watch BBC HD ?

don't you also need a TV greater than 26" to really appreciate HD? I have a phillips cineos 32" LCD and flipping between HD and non HD does show a slightly sharper image. While watching tennis for example you can see the individual strings in the net. I am not at all sure its worth all the...

PV and other alternative energy sources.

Roy, Oh dear. Why will it not work? To answer your questions. The current water heater is made by Thermor and is heated electrically. It is made from steel. The heating element is a "stealite resistor housed in an enameled sheath". The tank has an enameled lining and the heat insulation is...
