    why "off"?

Pete, my understanding of this is as in "can you take 12 off my order" or "Can you take 12 off the shelf". I've not found an explanation on Google either. Andy

    French wiring. What is this?

John, thanks. I was aware of and am a member at Totalfrance. I've only been looking at Completefrance for 2 days so would dare not pass comment on the members nor content but the forum software sucks. It won't even let me use Safari to link to a photobucket image using the IMG tags. This is...

    French wiring. What is this?

Thanks Dick, seems although not very neat it is not uncommon. So I will leave well alone. BTW what are you known as over there (completefrance). Do you ever pass this way? As you know I am only 5 mins from the Mesnil de Bavent. Cheers Andy

    French wiring. What is this?

I've got that particular T-shirt. All the sockets in the garage were on 10 amp lighting circuit with a spur to a lamp in the garden, a junction box inside the lamp fed a cable only 2" underground to the barn! All now ripped out and replaced. I guess putting up Uk style ceiling roses is a big...

    French wiring. What is this?

Thanks Dick, I too have not seen anything similiar in the books I have nor in the shops. So you think it is not normal practice or standard? The house was built 17 years ago. Cheers Andy

    French wiring. What is this?

I went up in the loft for only the second time in over 2 years and found this Now I know I am supposed to have a radial system (sockets etc daisy chained together) but I do not understand the need for this mega Junction Box? I'd welcome any info on its correct nomenclature in either...

    French vs UK building techniques

Roger, I don't quite understand why running the cables through a flexible conduit makes for easier modifications? I think it would be very difficult to pass an extra cable, for example through an existing conduit. Andy

    Google Streetview Coverage

I've managed to appear on Streetview twice. Once while driving my car the other standing at my kitchen window. Useful tool but it takes some of the enjoyment of discovery away. Andy

    Reusing white spirit - quickly.

Thanks Paul, I'd not seen or heard of that before. Looks too good to be true. Certainly for storing brushes while a job is ongoing it looks excellent. There seems to be a lot of good reviews elsewhere too. It will go on the list for the next supply drop (easter) unless I can find one over...

    Reusing white spirit - quickly.

I think I'll skip the flask and vacuum - I failed chemistry at school. I'd be interested to know why coffee filters did not work as I was going to buy some to try. I know that I can just wait for the sediment to settle but that takes weeks and I have about 5 litres of the stuff waiting to...

    Reusing white spirit - quickly.

Thanks Chris, I hope your shoulder is back to normal now. I really should have thought of that as I have used the old tights method for filtering out the crud in old paint. I just decanted 6 jam jars of used white spirit though 4 layers of what I hope is an old old pillow case - still comes...

    Reusing white spirit - quickly.

Is there any way I can speed up the process of paint settling in white spirit? I'm halfway through painting 5 wooden doors each is needing at least 3 coats of undercoat and I guess 2 of gloss. As I can only paint for 90 mins each day in the morning and only 3 days a week it is taking me ages...

In for a penny - on storing planes...

No need to drill holes, just use magnets Andy

    Boar.

Yep it's just around the corner. I've only been once, some fascinating stuff in there but a wee bit too arty for me. If I ever get the barn to workshop conversion done I will have one of their finials (epi de faîtage) to put on the roof. cheers Andy

    Boar.

Not really Dick, we're north east of Caen, eastern extremes of the Pays D'Auge. Close to the marais of the Dives. We see a lot of deer too and even a weasel, or stoat, it moved too darn quick to e sure. As for the hunters around here, if it moves it's shot! including the odd jogger! Andy

    Boar.

I have seen 5 of them!. They were rummaging around near a little pond at the end of our road. 4 of then made a break across the main road back towards the woods, the 5th went down our road towards a garage only to be chased away by one of the mechanics back past me and headed for it's mates...

    New TV

Sony and Panasonic always seem to come up top of the pile. When I was researching a while back I could not find a bad review for the Philips 32PFL9613. The missus also got a good staff discount which helped  Very good TV no problems with blacks, motion, judder, sound etc. Full HD works...

    Schools and snow

6" of snow over the past 3 or 4 days here. Schools open. Pre-school and primary. Both head teachers live in walking distance of school as do at least 4 of the 7 teachers. The roads though! Still not seen any evidence of a gritting lorry. The main road from Caen to Caboug has not been gritted...
