    Edible finishes

Yes that thought has crossed my mind, maybe he is making crisps and wants them well sealed?

Wax on top of Danish Oil

Martin, What did you use to buff the wax with? I now have one of these Chestnut brushes: It does look like the bristles are too course but it works a treat. You need to brush quite hard to get the wax to flow before it hardens off, sounds like you need to apply more elbow grease.

    daft question number 42

That sounds like the right sort of thing, check it is not as course as the scourer used for the washing up, you only need the finest of abrasive.

    daft question number 42

Paul, If it needs to be finished tomorrow then get back in the shop and get the first coat of oil on, then in the morning you can do the second coat, wax it in the late afternoon. The amount of oil used after the first coat goes down as the wood is sealed, so it does dry a bit quicker, leave it...

    daft question number 42

OK so finishing is not my strong point but I do like using oil. :) This is what I would do, sand or scrape depending on your preference to the surface smoothness require, probably babies bum. Then apply a generous coat of oil, I use a brush but you can use a rag, wear gloves as the oil...

Well I heard it while driving and wondered if it was The Steve Maskery or was there an imposter out there, as it didn't sound a bit like you!

    My Progress

Well I turned the pen blanks this evening and made a pencil! I use the sanding sealer, neat as I don't have any thinners, yet. I then used some Osmo hardwax oil gave a nice matt finish, I am pleased with it. I think I need to turn the wood down a bit more or shape the ends slightly, but as...

I agree with Wealden and Freud, I also have some from Titman another good UK based maker. The Axminster Perform are quite good value for the money as well.

    Workshop heating...

Get yourself some paving slabs and put the wood burner on those. I have a concrete floor that I put wood laminate down on. My wood burner is in the corner on 4 slabs to give a fire proof standing for it.

    My Progress

Well I have just had a sort thought the other stuff that Dave gave me when I picked up the lathe, found a part tin of Chestnut cellulose sanding sealer. So I am all set up on the finishing front. I cut some walnut blanks and left the glue drying on the brass pen tubes. I will try and turn them...

    Storage Shed - WIP **FINISHED!**

Gidon, Have I read that right, you framed the walls with 2*1 timber? If so I would want to add the skin the walls before I worked on the roof, for fear of it all toppling over. I also think you need a few more braces in the walls to stabilise them, so maybe that 2*1 was not really over?

    Bamboo pen

Steve, Did that give much tear out, some of the grain looks like goes across the pen not along it? I now have some pen kits, I have not tried turning one yet.

    My Progress

Thanks for the comments, I do find this great fun. :D I have tried turning lots of off cuts and still have a few more types of wood to try. Johnny the walnut is lovely to turn the finish I can get on it is so nice. 8) I now have a range of abrasives that go up to 1200, makes a big difference...
