    Sorby Sandmaster problem

Chas, I have taken the cir clip off the shaft to get a better look and in very small writing I think is says 686Z, looking at it does have shield in the outside face. The bearing is on the pad side of the head and the shaft just pokes though a plain hole in the back, two cir clips locate it in...

    My new workbench WIP

Now that is not how I would have done it. My bench has a solid top, I routed a slot for the back jaw of the face vice to slide up into. I left the top of the jaws below the surface of the bench, if you look here you can see the build thread. Just noticed the date on that thread I cannot...

    Sorby Sandmaster problem

Being a skinflint I have just bought the Axminster version of this. I have been and retrieved it from the shop and it does appear to have a shielded bearing in the handle, so is this the sort that fail quickly? Go on confirm I have wasted my money, well it was on special offer.

    Lyndhurst 3hp dust extractor review

If you are using it on the top of a standard dust collector, no. If you are using it as a filter on the output of a cyclone then the double open end offers using a top feed with a drop box to collect the fine dust from the filter.

    new table saw

Michael, Most modern saws are braked using a DC injection system to stop the motor, so if you swap out the motor and control gear then you have removed the brake. You can get this sort of brake for single phase motors, my planer/thicknesser has one. On some old kit the brake was a mechanical...

    My new workbench WIP

A dead man is the vertical board (with holes in) shown in the front of the bench, look back at the pictures of the different designs. Its used to support the end of long timber to stop it sagging as only the end is clamped in the vice.

    Garden Steps

Joe, If you are just up the road from Thorogoods then you are not that far from me and Mike G. :D He did have some oak for sale, don't know if he has any left, but it would probably be cheaper option than Thorogoods and its English as well. 8)

    Pen kits

I have bought a far bit from fun-e-turnz, is that who you mean? It is a woman, called Helen, good kits, I like the gun metal finish that she has. Very fair on the postage if you buy more than one lot. I have also bought face plates and centres from her, well pleased.

    Drill Guide

Olly, I am sure I got this bit in Tilgear: I have looked in their current catalogue and cannot see single bits listed but they do show a boxed set, which I also have: I find these carbide tipped cutters work well in hard wood, but don't self guide quite as well as 'proper' fosters as there is...

    Drill Guide

I drilled 20mm dog holes in my bench and the Veritas dog/pups and wonder dogs work OK in that size, but the Surface clamp, this one: Does not grip well in them, I have now bought a 3/4" bit and at some time may plug the 20mm holes and redrill so new ones.
