    Tearout

Am I being cack-handed - or is this just how it goes ... Trying my hand at a bit of "cabinet making" to make a small occasional/hall table about 50 cms square and a metre or so high. Bought a big plank of 1 1/4" beech for the top and rails, and a smaller length of 2" stock for the 4 legs...

    A good inexpensive bandsaw?

If you are buying new ... can't claim any experience of the Basato 3 ... but I'm really impressed with the Basato 4 I took delivery of a couple of weeks ago ... expect the 3 to be of the same quality ...

    Bandsaw for small workshop

I've not looked at either of these small saws - but I looked at larger Records and Scheppachs - and the latter seemed much better built and more solid. Early experience with the Basato 4 I bought is that it's a great bit of kit ... the little ones might be equally good?

    Scheppach Bassato 4 - "review"

My first bandsaw - so I can't do a lot of comparisons. Very heavy box on the pallet - emptied out the pieces and two of us carried the saw downstairs to the basement. Assembled there - I have screws and washers left over - but feels solid and well made - cleanly machined edges etc - better...

    New bandsaw questions

Good idea Mike - I had thought of that, but just wanted to get a post up quickly. Here are some ... The cabinet/base used a whole lot of screws and I used smooth washers between metal and nut on them all ... These are the bits I have left - lots of spring and smooth washers, the four angle...

    New bandsaw questions

Truck arrived delivering a Scheppach Basato 4 today ... it's been 3 months since I ordered it ... apparently manufacturing problems ... at last though! Hmmm ... No mains lead! Phonecall to NMA - it'll be in the post ... (very frustrated!) Follow the very meagre instructions to...

    Waney Furniture Inspiration...

Como got in with the reference to Tim Stead before I did - but he's influenced a whole lot of others too. I've got a few of his chairs, and having visited his steading more than once have sat on/at/etc a lot more (his kitchen/living room is amazing!) ... it's fantastically tactile furniture to...

    working with waney edge

Waney edges can look very good without the bark but leaving the sapwood etc ... Tim Stead did this a lot with thick bits of elm especially, and I like much of his furniture. Not sure a thin bit of oak would have the same effect however. http://www.timsteadfurniture.co.uk/ He treated all his...

    new axminster bandsaws

If you could buy just one chuck...

I have one ... but only have nova/axminster jaws to use in it so multiple jaw options of limited interest ... but no end-stop to jaw movements meant I thought I had a surely clamped piece ... lathe on-switch resulted in a large bowl-jaw and a 15" salad bowl flying destructively across the...

    Beginner - Wood Carving Set

I think the AI basic set would be better - you won't be struggling with poor/blunt steel ... but it's twice the money. Have you looked at the Flexcut tools - for much the same money or a bit more you can get some good tools ... well I've been very pleased with how well they work in my hand and...

    Workshop ceiling height advice, please

As someone who works in a basement with a ceiling height of about 6'4' (and is 6'2" tall), I recommend all the height you can get, for lengths of wood, for machinery, for the fairly tall thing you want to work at on the bench ...

    Using chairmaking tools?

Ah - someone else who likes the travisher! Thanks for the thoughts on the inshave - I hoped it might be good for shifting more wood quicker - will try skewing across the grain ...

    Using chairmaking tools?

Trying again at a carved stool seat. After advice here, when I was at the show in Harrogate last month, I bought an inshave curved drawknife and a travisher. The travisher is on of Tom Thackrays ... http://www.tomthackraywindsorchairs.co.uk/Tools.htm... played with it on his stand and was very...

    buying a bandsaw ...

Thought long and hard, did some "research", I want a bandsaw for preparing turning blanks and workshop work ... limited by budget and that my workshop is in the basement so weight/height restrictions apply ... decided on Scheppach Basato 4 ... and got a good price from Anglia Tools ... at the...

    Replacements blades for old Stanleys

I put a Clifton blade and cap iron into an "unuseable" old No 4 - I`d fettled it to try to make it work to no avail - transformed into a useful tool without outrageous cost. Recomended!

Robert Sorby Deluxe Revolving Centre System

I have one and it's useful, for boring lamps and supporting them once bored out with the auger, and the cups have been useful too ... in fact I have 2 (almost) ... as I have a nearly complete set to go with an M1 that's gathering dust unused since I moved to a newer, bigger lathe with an M2...
