    Let's play, whatinthehellisthis?!

I'm sure more pictures would help; I'm thinking with the mention of possibly to do with cars things like a hose clip tool. Looks like it was intended to get into awkward spaces. The trouble is if it is to do with cars, there are a lot of special tools for awkward jobs on a particular make of car.

    Practical tips for beginners.

In a similar vein, don't assume your steel rule is straight. Certainly don't start trying to flatten a plane sole on the basis that you can see light when a ruler edge is put to it. Many of them - especially modern ones - are slightly banana shaped, I assume because of how that are cut from...

    The Goodmanham Plane

Indeed a very nice job. Does the domestic oven get hot enough for tempering, mine didn't seem to get quite there. Do you just pop it in, or use a sand tray ? Hah, Andy beats me to it again. I was going to say that there is an article by Chris Schwarz on Roman woodworking benches in issue 2...

    Half or split cap iron

Clifton planes are no longer fitted with them, but it could be worth a try calling Thomas Flinn, they are usually pretty helpful.

    Renovate natural sharpening stones?

I have a bit of a question; I've heard the recommendation to flatten oilstones on a concrete paving slab / coping stone / ... before. I have even tried it. Aside from a small number of nasty scratches, it did not do any sort of useful flattening. Those who recommend it - do you mean to...

    Saw sharpening/deep ripping technique

Like this ? http://www.blackburntools.com/new-tools ... index.html Looks quite an easy thing to make.

    Female portion of sliding dovetail.

I had a go at long sliding dovetails for a bookcase - I think I posted it here somewhere. My first idea was to make a pair of planes, but I wanted to get on with it so ... I first tried cutting the female part with two angled saw cuts using a guide block as described already, removing the...

How do we get kids to be engineers

I've been avoiding this thread. I'm an engineer (CEng) and get quite weary of the cyclic discussions in the IET magazine: Why can't we attract more women into engineering ? How can we get proper respect for our profession rather than being lumped together with Sky TV installers and City...

    Litchenberg Wood Burning - dangerous

Ring = inadvertent single turn secondary winding for a nearby transformer, shorted out and around a body part. I'm sure this can be done quite safely, and without being 40m or even 6 feet away from it. Electricity needs a few kV per mm to arc through air - you just need adequate insulation and...

    Rebating with a combination plane

I'm sure I recall the 050C manual showed making rebates by ploughing two narrow grooves at right angles so that the grooves meet and the rest of the waste is parted off ?

Replacing the plastic handle on a Record 044C

I get on OK with that plastic handle on my 045C. The biggest frustration is that the shavings often seem to block up rather than ejecting properly when ploughing grooves, needing occasional pauses to poke them out. Careful positioning of the fngers to keep them out of the way can help, but not...

If I wanted to learn Blacksmithing, where do I start?

My friend Simon at NT's Wimpole estate does a bit of blacksmithery. He has a Victorian forge to play with; all the forging is done with charcoal as fuel. Being the estate forester, he's usually not short of charcoal. He does courses too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YumpkSlcgWU

    Renovating old Loudspeakers

Oooh. Transmission line speakers. I remember looking desirously at a pair of those when I was going through a HiFi phase. Well worth the bother.

    Wooden plane on Ebay

I don't think you're seeing the same plane as me Andy; the out of focus side bead is listed in a "more chances to get what you want" list. I'm seeing this: (if it works)

    Wooden plane on Ebay

Well yes, the top bit looks like a shallow hollow with a missing cutter, but what's it standing on or attached to ? It appears to be presented as part of the item, but is it a bit of something else ?

    Wooden plane on Ebay

So this is an ended listing now in EBay, but I can't work out what the heck I'm looking at and it is bugging me. Anyone figure it out ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-PLANE ... true&rt=nc You'll need to scroll a bit for the photos.

Kitchen table Chestnut food grade finish

Have these water based finishes improved any of late ? I began to avoid them after trying a few types (I think including the Ronseal Diamond) and finding that after fair bit of handling everything took on a soft, tacky feel. I had to strip the lot off a chair after the arm rests became horribly...

    Blackjack flashing tape fail

I always assumed that stuff was for quick and dirty bodged repairs. Where I've used it I've since replaced it with lead done properly, which I quite enjoyed. Horrible sticky job getting it off again. White spirit does dissolve it eventually where I needed to clean off the primer.

Classic Handtools - Mortise & Tenon magazine.

I have both issues. At one per year, the cost is ok. It is nothing like a magazine you might be thinking of. More like a quality softback book. Focus is a bit American. It has interviews with conservators and modern makers. Covers details like dating screws and nails. Ways in which...

    ...........

Well maybe in your cases. But most of the countryside is owned by people who paid nothing for it, but inherited it ultimately from people who just took it, driving out the people who lived there if need be. I feel strongly that we must defend such access to the countryside as we have, it was...
