***** March Round Platter Challenge *****

This is my entry for March, the platter. This was originally 10" diameter, however, after an unexpected design change (where the rim decided to detach itself from the platter), the platter was promptly reduced to a diameter of 6.25". Made from Oak, and finished with danish oil.

    February's Challenge, a Candlestick

Made from spalted sycamore, 9.5" tall, the width varies from just over 3" at the base down to about 0.75" at the narrowest part. I got a good finish straight off the tool, so only needed a light sanding with 240 grit abrasive. I then applied a coat of sanding sealer, and de-nibbed it with 400...

Blister, thanks for organising this, it's a really good idea. I would like to enter, but i'm not sure I could commit to all 12 months/items. Would it cause any problems if I didn't enter every month? Cheers Mark

Help: Bearing removal on a Union Jubilee lathe

Hi Morgan and welcome to the forum. I recently changed the bearings on my jubilee... If you take a look at this thread -> https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/lathe-bearings-t43546.html, it has most of the information needed to replace union jubilee bearings. If you need any more help let me...

Drilling pen blanks in the lathe - problem

I would normally recommend giving the drill bit a wipe with a bit of hard bee's wax or a candle, this will stop the screeching. But since your drilling for a pen blank, it's probably not a good idea, because the wax will interfere with the glue when you stick the tube in. However, for...

    Diabetes culinary advice please

Steve, You could always use a sugar substitute like spenda or canderel, as Harbo suggests. If your friend is Type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant), sugar is not really a big deal as he could adjust his insulin dose. If he is Type 2 I'd stick with the sugar substitute as he needs to control...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Eoin, You should be able to get those moisure absorbant crystals from a caravan/camping supplies shop. We have bought them in the past for keeping damp at bay when storing the caravan for the winter. Hope this helps. Mark

Are link belts known to be noisy?

Thanks for help Chas, the rear headstock bearing is a self aligning bearing which confirms what you were saying about compensating for longitudinal movement. I suppose as the noise in no worse than what it was before I changed the bearings, I should just accept it as the lathes normal...

Are link belts known to be noisy?

ok, so I tried the temporary belt and it didn't make any difference to the noise level. I've just had a go at listening to the bearings with a long screwdriver (which is a useful trick by the way, I must remember that one) and I noticed that the outboard bearings seem to be louder than the...

Are link belts known to be noisy?

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys. Chas, I have an old rachet strap that I could make a trial belt from, I will give it a go later. I am starting to think that it is the bearing noise being amplified as you mentioned. I suppose the trial belt will prove it one way or another. If I...

Are link belts known to be noisy?

I have just replaced the bearings in my union jubilee lathe as I was starting to notice a slight wobble on the spindle. I followed the instructions given by parvum in the thread https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/lathe-bearings-t43546.html Anyway, the bearing change was successful and cured...
