What kind of wax on plane soles?

I was told in no uncertain terms by a paint laboratory manager in a certain major motor manufacturer not far from here (when I asked him to spray a control box with Hammerite) that it's silicone that makes the hammer finish, and that he would never be able to get the (******) stuff out of the...

    polystyrene boxes

Insulation will not keep anything warm indefinitely unless there is a source of heat. Lagging an outside tap works because the pipe receives conducted heat from the inside of the house. You either need to seal tools from the damp - eg in any sealed box, or with camellia oil, or else you can...

    Tennis Elbow

I was free from the dreaded TE for a few years then got it back scrubbing the patio with a broom. As my other hobby is air pistol shooting it messes up both pastimes. I use an Epi-Med clamp whilst working and driving (and shooting). It helps by pushing the tendon towards the inside just a...

What kind of wax on plane soles?

I just draw a zig-zag down the sole using a simple candle. Takes 3 seconds. Some also stick carpet to a piece of board, rub some oil in, and "park" the plane on it when checking for square etc. I don't find oil very slippery though.

Record BS250 - great, but watch the bearings!

Well deary me, I spoke too soon! The two replacement lower blade guide bearings just clogged with dust again. The thrust bearing is still OK. All I did was hoover them every usage, having also fitted an extractor right under the table to try and take the dust away from them. Still they lasted a...

    Useful Reject

Paul - I rounded some of the corners off my L_N Carcass saw handle, but only because I had to, having knocked the corner off putting it away  Problem is the curly maple underneath is lighter than the finish. L-N should explain that Heirloom Quality Tools should never come into contact...

    Plane handles

I must confess to sometimes bending the studs to match the angle.

Grubby Record no. 2 just sold for a fortune.

I suppose it's because I'm not a collector, but if I was going to buy a number 1 or 2 for a 3 figure sum it would be a Lie-Nielsen. Why should rarity make something valuable? Stupid question, I know. If I had bought that Record #2 I would have to give it the complete Jarviser makeover...

    Plane handles

I have swapped handles between Record and Stanley. The 2 3/8 inch planes usually have larger handles than the 2 inch planes though, and usually have an extra screw in the base. Swap 4 with 4 is OK. The only problem you may have is in the length of the threaded stud. This is a strange thread...

    how do shoulder planes work???

I only use a shoulder plane to take a few thou off a tenon shoulder that has been sawn, to get a clean join edge. Nicker blades are only used when cutting a rebate across the grain, but you should be able to cut a rebate from scratch with a rebate plane, like a stanley 78, on boards too wide to...

Grubby Record no. 2 just sold for a fortune.

Who said Record planes don't fetch much? This grubby little No 2 just went for £143. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6224006210&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 I couldn't have that in a collection (even if I had one) it needs to be put out of its misery surely. A...

Record BS250 - great, but watch the bearings!

Since this post first went in, Recordpower have updated the user manuals and improved them, and included the new fence rail, blade tensioning etc. There were a couple of snags that I wrote to them about, but they have now corrected them. The updated manual can be downloaded from...

    Removing set from a saw

I'll maybe spend the money on some new traditional files then. I have seen in several places a recommendation to use a new file for each saw. Unfortunately being a tight wad I want files to last forever, or until they fall down that hole in the workshop where all my pencils, punches and rules...

    Removing set from a saw

Mike, have you ever used a diamond coated triangular file? I have never seen one in the flesh - I dont know if they have the right shape or not, but I thought they may be good for an occasional "hone" or to do the final strokes??

    Removing set from a saw

If it were mine I would resharpen, that way you know it is sharpened how you want it anyway - straight rip, cross, or whatever you choose in between.

    Naughty Me

How about 1938? (no I am not quite old enough). Record or Stanley number 4 was about 13/6d (67.5p) and the average wage was about £2.50 per week. That makes it about just over a third of a week's wage. Average overall salary in 2004 was £504 which would make the plane £130 today, more than twice...

    Oak Box (Finished)

I think with the contrasting plugs it looks great, and with twin start threads, screwing into end grain is fairly standard these days (not in my day though!) With all that meaty timber, glue alone could fail if the boards cup a little in the heat of the house. It shouldn't go anywhere with 3...

    No subject

Paul, Books, old catalogues, websites and more books! Bailey is an American pattern which I believe was owned by Stanley but passed into the public domain, and was copied by Record and others at the start of the 20th century. As far as I know Stanley were the only ones to cast "Bailey" in the...

    No subject

I must confess to being a "lifeboatman" when it comes to run-of-the-mill planes (I presume that's a standard 1960's Bailey). I take off the totes and smear the whole lot with paint stripper, which usually cleans up the brassware too. I shine up the the exposed base casting edges and repaint...

is a work bench a hand tool?

Paul, sometimes you will only be able to plane a long board on a workmate, or even two workmates in tandem, because the bench is too short. If you clamp a long 3x2 to the workmate top and push it up against a brick wall, it will make the workmate very rigid. Plenty of candlewax in a zigzag on...
