    Bleeding oil

Hi Duncan If you appy the oil while the bowl is still on the lathe you can then after wiping off the excess turn on the lathe to spin any oil in the burr holes off. While it's spinning burnish it with a soft cloth. Do remember to stand out of the line of fire when starting the lathe

    record power cl1

I don't believe the CL1 has an adjustable bearing and you say you've already replaced the front bearing. Has this been fitted correctly? You say ".....lathe is running or not even with no timber mounted ready to turn i can tap the head stock or tail stock even the bed bars with the palm of my...

Alf That's a perfect description of SWMBO's firelighting method

Abranet , anyone use it ?

Hi Blister I've been using it for about a year now and it is great for turnings, particularly on dense timbers like Yew. You don't get the heat build up because of the open mesh, it's very efficient and long lasting - I've only just re-stocked after using the samples sent to me and there is a...

    Spalting

Both causes have already been mentioned. If the wood wasn't dry then the spalting process does continue. Regarding the finish I would have used cellulose sanding sealer and then the wax.

Which lathe? Axminster M900 or the FOX F46-719 ?

Nads Yes the M900 has been in production a number of years but the basic 'chasis' of the lathe is produced in asia and used by a number of different companies and badged accordingly. As I said before Axminster do increase the spec for their version of the lathe. If I was you I'd contact...

You asked for photos ! Here they are , Last ones !

Hi Blister Only just checked out your recent purchase - a Euro 2000 - congratulations and welcome to turning without belts (only useful for keeping your trousers up  ). The only problem with direct drive is that it makes you lazy when working on other variable speed lathes with belts - you...

Which lathe? Axminster M900 or the FOX F46-719 ?

I heard some good reports about Fox lathes although I've never worked on one myself but I have on the M900. The M900 comes from the same place as the Perform and a number of other lathes but Axminster do up the spec with regard to the motor etc. Comparing the two the Fox looks a better buy on...

    Compressor Help Please

Hi Paul If air brushing and blowing out are all you are planning I'm sure there's a small compressor designed for use with air brushing -sorry I can't be more specific but I think I saw it in the Axminster catalogue. The problem when you get a compressor is that you find more tools you want to...

    What timber

Paul It's hard to identify timber from it's colour - I was always taught to look at the grain rather than the colour. But in your case you can definitely say you it is spalted. The black lines are known as zone lines and are caused by fungi advancing into the wood as they rot it. As the fungi...

    Suitable dust extractor

There are various sizes in the camvac range - there is a small one which is pretty portable. With my large one I put my own set of wheels on it - not costly at all, bolted into the base, just make you use seals to prevent air leakage. You can also now get remote operated plug boards from...

    Rashes from wood turning!!

You should at the very least be wearing a full face visor for protection! I know turners who after years of working with various timbers suddenly develope alleges to them. In one case the turner had to give up working with wood completely, so it's good practice to be as well protected as possible.

    Lathe Accessories

Could I just clarify the use of a roughing gouge as you expressed an interest in bowls and hollow forms. A roughing gouge should only be used for parallel grain/spindle turning and not for cross grain/bowl work. It is not designed for the stresses involved in bowl work being forged rather than...

Could anyone ID this wood please

Hi Graham No I won't be able to make it this year as I'll be at Westonbirt (ran out of M Balluet's finest at Xmas - I can see another trip is required!)

Could anyone ID this wood please

I think it could be Acacia. This does become very hard when dry and the transition from heartwood to sapwood in your picture look very much like it.
