    Vitra bathroom fittings failing

The modern flush valves are also easily affected by entrained dirt in the water. Can be a problem if the pipework outside/in the street has dirt in them. Don't expect your water company to be helpful in such an instance! Duncan

    Smoking

I have absolutely no desire to get into the unnecessarily antagonist debate above but I wondered if lack of oxygen to the car engine would cause it to stop before lack of oxygen to the individual caused them to die. Please, only reasoned answers; it's a genuine question

    Headstock Spindle Thread

If, as you say, the damage is minor, I'd just try dressing the threads with a small triangular or thin file, or even with a set of needle files. Possibly even a suitably shaped diamond sharpening tool which you could then use for little tool sharpening jobs around the workshop.

    Flood proofing new shed

Welded steel plates for the floor and sides to above the expected water level. Steps/ramp for access inside and out. Insulated inside. Use high quality marine paints for corrosion protection - it's good enough for ships sailing in salt water. Timber construction above that. If inside working...

Slow Speed Bench Grinders in the UK

Not quite as simple as that; it would need to have a 3 phase motor

First lathe: which spindle thread to choose?

M33 x 3.5mm definitely the way to go. It is the standard nowadays even on small lathes. Only thing to watch out for is that many newer lathes have a Euroloc collar to prevent the chuck coming off by accident. These are great but they do make the spindle longer and some of the cheaper chucks...

    Canadian Wood Turners Tour 2025

Bill's Mill in Woburn Sands, MK17 8DE, is said to be good - if somewhat quirky. I've never been there myself. Tel +447402 621619 Email [email protected] facebook.com/billsmilluk It is a mile or two west of M1 J13. Very handy if you are travelling M1, M25, A21 to Hastings

    16 Amp Plug & Socket.....How Tight?

I had a similar issue with a plug and socket - essentially down to cheap rubbish with poor tolerances between the male and female parts. So bad that there was a danger of pulling the socket off the wall. As suggested, careful application of lubricant may help, or exchange for better quality...

    Canadian Wood Turners Tour 2025

Bill, this sticky may be of help to you: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/uk-ireland-timber-yards-please-add-your-favourites.108370/ Some of the entries are a little out of date e.g. Geddington sawmill has gone after the death of it's proprietor. Definitely worth considering are MAC Timbers...

Any gas heating engineers on the forum? Advice needed.

Typically, around here (Northampton) quotes are £3.5k to £4k, but that would be for a Vaillant or Worcester Bosch and include a flush, fitment of magnetic filter and the aforementioned condensate drain. If replacing a standard boiler with a combi, there may well be additional costs such as...

Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

Mike G spent many years dispensing free, detailed advice on this forum, helping countless people with their workshop and other builds. Frequently, his comprehensive posts would have taken a good deal of his time and I'm sure he did this in part because he is proud of the work he does. To suggest...

Where can I purchase metal thread inserts for Ash's Urn?

Would brass 2" or 2.5" BSP plumbing fittings (or their metric equivalent) do the job? You might struggle with the 650mm size though!! Duncan

old roughing gouge, any good for beginner?

To me, it looks as if the handle is not original - too long, and with too much tang protruding. I'd be wary of using it in its present form. Happy to be put right if I'm wrong!

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

Folkstone Fixings (FFX) placed into Administration

They've cut their headcount by about 20% since those figures. The annual report clearly states that they are on the case although that's not always a guarantee of success. Companies House has the details. I wish them success; we need a good mix of shops for healthy competition and a choice of...

    Gotten

The Americanism I struggle with is "alternate" instead of "alternative". This is used by many educated Americans so presumably is correct for that side of the pond, but how do they say "alternate" as in alternating conditions?

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

Coarse abrasive (60 grit) will clean the polishing mop once you've got your lathe running.
