    More Rocks

Salmens Oil stone is a brand Salmens used, however sometimes they have used YL as well as other slates and have seen even carborundum. Yellow Lake is a quarry in Snowdonia, however the material from there is novaculite not slate. YL is brand of slate hones.

    Another stone question, sorry.

Henk was using his spoon to recognise the finish as well as if there were any inclusins and hardness. It was not very scientific and he was planning to make a machine/ tester where he would use a bearing ball of known surface polish to slide in predetermined number of times with constant preset...

    Whats under the stone.

Then my educated guess is LI - Grecian hone.

    Whats under the stone.

Can you confirm that the hone absorbs the water?

    I would agree with that

    Whats under the stone.

To Swagman Henk died 2 years ago therefore he will not be able to answer the question anymore. I had a guess for Llyn Idwall - grecian hone, however what throws me is that you described is as absorbing water which LI does not. As with TOS also I do not think so. Again does not absorb water.

    Thoughts on the Cretan

The specialist on Cretan and Old Turkey is Vasilis on SRP. To my limited knowledge the main difference between brown and nearly black is that the darker version was cooked in oil which increased harness as well as getting finer results. The payback for it is increased fragility. Old Turkeys were...

    Another car boot hone.

I do have few Turkey hones and can say that they are just tad softer that Arkies and do not need need to be flattened too often as most other natural hones do. There are two main varieties light and dark with sources from Crete to Turkey. The best man to speak to about them is at present Vasilis...

    Car Boot Hone

It would make us 2. Unfortunately the only 2 people who had that ability are not able to do it anymore. One retired and the other is exploring hones in sky.

    Car Boot Hone

I do believe that there is slate in Dronfield but this could be already in Derbyshire. However Silkstone is not just slate. From some of the documents which I have read few years back there was a layer od slate like rock bellow coal deposit in one of the Yorkshire mines used as sharpening stone...

    Replacement fine stone

The Aloxite No 200 is finisher barber hone with grit arrount 8-10 000 (depends on the norm you use). The original DT from Inigo Jones is only from one location and even then specialy sellected by Mr Rogers. (watch out for fakes from other sellers). It has interesting habit. Id you lap it (dress...

    Car Boot Hone

Silkstone is nice finisher hone for razors and other fine edged tools. I do have few examples in my collection and you are right the prices are high and sometimes ridiculously high. The origin is not known however my educated guess is in Yorkshire. You have done realy well Bugbear. Enjoy it.

    Waterstone

Normaly just by going over with finger nail you should feel the difference. However you do not have to do much of grinding to see the difference. What you need is a bit of magniffication. Compare scratch patterns and finer is higher grit.

    Sharpening chisels/planes

Sorry to say there are younger hones which came from Whittle Hillquite recently (just few I saw sold on bay by guy who got hold of some stone from one of the quarries) but also there were others made in fifties and sixties by the last CF honemaker. Also there are other quarries/ sources for CFs...

    Sharpening chisels/planes

Sorry wrong suspicion. Theere are few collectors but not as many as straight razor honers. Those straight razor guys love them (yes i am one of the as well as collector with deeper interest in specifficaly this type of hone) and that is what drew prices up for good stones. However there are now...
