    Evolution Rage R210cms

Bought one of these from Screwfix last week, for cutting box section steel. £49 seemed like a good price. It is very light and plasticy though. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I have read that they may not be very accurate but it will be more accurate than a hand- held angle grinder...

Powerfile beltsander are they any good?

I bought a cheapie from Aldi for about £25-£30. It does not get as much use as I expected but is one of those really handy tools when you need them - a bit like the multi tool. I was surprised at how aggressively it can remove wood. I haven't tried it on metal yet but I would expect it to be...

    variable speed lathe conversion?

Hi Ian, I may be wrong here and apologise if so, but I was assuming that any switchgear which disconnects the motor from the inverter whilst running would be a bad thing for the inverter. The safety microswitches would do just that if operated accidentally while the motor was running, and if...

    Uses for an old lathe?

A second, or even a third, disc sander would allow you to have different grades of abrasive without having to peel off sanding discs. A bit wasteful on space but quite convenient. K

That was a stupid thing to do.

The main thing is that we learn from our mistakes, always assuming we survive the accident in the first place. K

    variable speed lathe conversion?

That is what I do JG. I can plug whichever machine I want into the 3 phase socket on the inverter. When I wrote the motor must be connected directly to the inverter, I meant that you must not interrupt the inverter output to the motor by having switchgear which can open the circuit. Using a plug...

    variable speed lathe conversion?

Agree. The way to variable speed is a 3 phase motor which can be connected in delta mode ( not all can so check before buying) and a 3 phase inverter. Save yourself grief and get a British made one. I have posted about this several times before, as have others. Take notice of issues such as...

That was a stupid thing to do.

I can remember having my first go at woodturning, it was at the first school I was teaching in and the woodwork master allowed a few of us staff to use the workshop. I had no issues but the young lady with long hair who was polishing a silver ring mounted on a wooden mandrel on the lathe was...

Where Can I buy some Regular Rolled oats?

We use approx a 50/50 mix of Scott's traditional and Scott's old fashioned oats for morning porridge, cooked with about 2/3 milk to 1/3 water. The old fashioned on its own we find a bit thick and hard going, but the mix is just right. Has to be Scott's though, Quaker oats just doesn't do it...

    Like, Share and Subscribe

What I find annoying is some of the poor quality camera work. You get someone with obviously very good sklls who has made some really neat item, certainly worthy of sharing on youtube. Then they can't be bothered to pay any attention to the video they are creating - close up shots of the...

This one is definitely a 'past mistake'... help please

May I make a rather obvious suggestion? Bolt the machine to the floor!!! Just in case it happens again, perhaps with someone's feet in the way next time. K

    Should potatoes grow this large?

Well it beats any of mine, I had blight AGAIN this year. Many of the potatoes I dug up were about the same size as the seed potatoes I planted. My onion sets ended up about golfball size, and I had 3 courgettes. What a cr@p year. K

    Myford ML8 chuck

Over £100? I meant over £1000 at today's prices. I have an old price list so these are genuine figures. The stand was a further £252, 240 volt motor was £79 , and a push button starter box was £23. So for a lathe with motor etc, rear turning and a cabinet to sit on would have cost £738 plus...

Brad Pitt divorce - do we really care?

It is nearly always unfortunate when couples divorce, and worse when children are involved, BUT - do the general British public really care about Brad Pitt's divorce? In other words, is this worthy of BBC news? I think it is just trivia. Even more trivial - on today's BBC 1.00 news we are told...

    Myford ML8 chuck

The inboard side ( over the bed) is threaded 1" x 12 threads per inch ( tpi). The outboard side is threaded 7/8" x 12 tpi left hand. Myford made an early type of chuck but the holding options were limited and these days the more popular option is the 4 jaw self centreing scroll chuck because of...

rot proof wood for fencing - tanalised/ pressure treated etc

Tanalising does not seem to be done consistently in my experience, with some tanalised timber still good but other, newer timber (different supplier) rotted through. So now I always let the tanalised stuff dry out in the shed and give it a good few coats of spirit based wood preservative...

Gate and fence ideas/ solution please. Pretty please.

Nev, could you make up a framework to span the 1.8 m section, fixed to the garage front at one end. The opposite end could be made up of a 3x3 or 4x4 post fixed to ths ground with a metal bolt-down fence post holder. You could infill with trellis effect for some privacy. Then the return to the...

    Roller stands

I have some like these and yes, they are a bit flimsy. I find they can start to fold up or tip over if they are adjusted a bit too high, or not quite in line wih the flow ofthe wood. I have been thinking of knocking up a wooden base which would increase the base area to make them more steady. I...
