Advice to a 15 yo wanting a woodwork career

In addition, thinking of what I reach for in almost every project: Marking guage, combination square, sliding bevel, panel saw, tenon saw, marking knife.

    The Face Mask Store?

I bought a new simple automatically darkening welding mask on eBay for about £20 (with warranty) about 5 years ago. It's worked flawlessly since. Has a grinding setting that prevents the darkening cutting in. They seem pretty cheap and ubiquitous these days.

    Sliding Lid Movement

I've made a few boxes with sliding lids like this. I've fixed the 'puller' by making it a snug fit in the puller's groove and then using a small amount of glue just in the centre. That allows the lid to expand and contract across its width.

    Wrist watch question

+1 My titanium Ecodrive is 30yrs old and a tough as nails, lightweight daily wearer. About 5yrs ago I had the battery replaced by an independent repairer and the movement needed cleaning and lubricating. Works perfectly again. Highly recommended.

Do fix broken stuff or buy again?

I volunteer at the local Repair Café. We receive all sorts of stuff across the bench and many are simple fixes that we can do on the spot. However, if it's more complicated many of us are happy to take items home to diagnose and mend - we all abhor waste and throwaway habits and try to do our...

    Oak raised planters

The raised beds I built 25yrs ago from 'proper' sleepers are still fine. The ones I made from green oak 20yrs ago have rotted badly. I didn't line either with polythene.

Increasing precision for hand mitre cutting.

I made one of these rather than a donkey's ear version mostly because it takes up less space, and I prefer holding my material flat and canting the plane. A little fine tuning and it's spot in, making mitres far easier. As others have mentioned, the pieces to be joined must be identical...

    lift's the spirit.....mine anyway.....

One of the few good things to come from shared hardship. You Kiwis are pretty stoic and will battle your way through. Stay safe, kind and we look forward to seeing more of your work.

    paraffin Heater

Most of these dosing pumps deliver 0.02ml per pulse, and run at a max of about 5 pulses per second, so about 360ml per hour at full chat. Mine only runs at that rate for maybe 30 mins, then achieves the preset temp 14degC and goes into tickover rate (about 1 pulse per second). I typically turn...

    One family's solar story

£8 a year to run a toothbrush charger! Great statistic. Maybe the 250-500W overnight isn't actually too bad in winter, since entropy allows that to be "useful" in reducing the heating load. Summer's a different story though. Please continue providing the updates on your journey. It's really...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I experimented with dimensions and spacing in Sketchup and made a dummy piece to confirm the measurements worked in reality. The holes are 5mm deep and 6mm diameter and were drilled using a drill press and some blocks to position the dominos. All the "bottom left" holes were drilled, then the...

Wood burning stove for the workshop?

I reckon that would be long enough to have wrecked the dosing pump if there was insufficient lubrication. I'll switch to neat 28sec and keep my fingers crossed while I enjoy the savings 😉

Wood burning stove for the workshop?

How long have you had yours running on 28sec heating oil? If it's all working hunky dory, then I'll cease using a blend of red diesel and 28sec. Cheers

Wood burning stove for the workshop?

Thanks Izzy, My oil CH boiler has a geared pump (rather than the simple piston type in our heaters) and states it works on Kerosene, Low Sulphur Kerosene and ultra low sulphur diesel oil (ULSD). I would guess that if you've been using your heater on domestic heating oil (28sec) for some time and...
