    Mortiser Elec fault

The thing is that as it's not a fractional horsepower motor (don't know what the regs say now, but IIRC it used to be that) for something like a fan, then it must be fitted with a starter that gives no volt release. I'd fit any workshop kit with a no volt release. That is if the power goes off...

    Mortiser Elec fault

Sorry but at the moment it just looks like a mess. All the makes of starters are slightly different internally, and it looks like the wiring has been messed about with. Personally, I'd get a new starter with start and stop buttons on the front as Spectric says. Generally although they're pretty...

    Mortiser Elec fault

ETA I made a mistake and quoted myself. Meant to quote Spectric about getting a new starter. His idea is by far the best option IMO. OP you want a unit with a 230V AC coil. All the decent ones I've come across have three phase overloads. Basically you wire it so the motor load goes through...

    Mortiser Elec fault

If the motor runs, you have a good start. (Pun not intended) The "stop" buttons, both the one on the starter itself (assuming it has buttons) are normally closed, and are in series with the coil. The start button in normally open and in series as well. The "hold on" contact, is across the start...

    Some mistake, surely?

I never, never, ever do that. At least not more than three or four times a day. TBH, I'm usually on my own working, so I often just use the most convenient size. 36" is more convenient than 914.4 mm.

    Some mistake, surely?

I think it was 12 months ago, might have been the year before. I'm about 6' tall. I still use that, although I use the metric system for everything else. And kg for weight! 😂 Anyway, they measured my height, and according to them I was 5' 10" So next time I went in a few weeks later, I asked...

Work so hard you cripple yourself

I know. That's why I won't vote for them. It's pretty dull anyway isn't it? Still if you want to argue semantics. Go ahead. I won't be joining in. "The Tories are" "Labour are" Yes, as I said in the first place, both as bad as each other. Basically both unelectable. Staggering from one...

Fobco 1/2” Cap Bench drill dimensions?

That's the trouble with all lifting gear, you need the headroom to use it. I've got an engine crane these days, but as you say, you still need the room above. What we could do with is some of those anti gravity sky hooks! 😊

    Magnifying lens

Couple of magnifiers with a light in them that clamp on the desk / worktop. One with a fluo, one LED. Several hand magnifiers of various types, and a set of glass head worn magnifiers. As already said they all have their uses. What I have found though is that I tell my optician that I do fine...

Work so hard you cripple yourself

The problem always seems to be that some people think that the sun shines from one party or the other's fundament. It really doesn't. They're all as bad as each other really. I don't like the link between Labour and the unions, or the idealism, there. That means I would never vote for them...

Countertop cutout fail and how to correct it?

Jigsaws don't cut square. It doesn't matter which model, how used, or which blades, the cut wanders off square. It's a fact. The only answer is a router.

Fobco 1/2” Cap Bench drill dimensions?

If it's anything like the Walker Turner I have, then "B****y heavy" describes it exactly. Last time I put it on a bench I used rope blocks to lift it. I can move it around, but not really pick it up, it'd need two blokes for that.

Flip over saw head locking knob loose / not locking

Unless you're lucky enough to find someone with the same saw, who has fixed the same problem, then the only way I know to deal with things like this is to strip it down, clean it all up properly, and examine it carefully under a good light. Experience says there is sometimes a crack in the...

Work so hard you cripple yourself

When I was in my 30s, I was doing a fair bit of house renovations, both my own and other people's. In those days, as you probably remember, cement came in hundredweight bags. Around 50kg. Used to throw them about no problem. We were always loading and unloading them. I had a LWB Landy, and used...

So you turned the one leg, but the others wouldn't come right? 😊

Moving from Devon to SW Scotland

Stopped there once at (I think it was the Queens back then) the King's Arms. Sometime around 1990. Thought it was a nice quiet friendly place there. House sounds good (and the garage!) Hope it's a successful move for you.

Wacky things you've made and don't know what to do with!

Doesn't matter if it's any actual use or not as long as you enjoyed making it. Half the fun is just pottering about really, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Accurate drill-sharpening jig for Sorby Pro-edge?

    Wadkin ags 10 Lock Nut

I'd be looking at sending it back for a refund. "Special nut" is hardly an engineer's description of a nut, and it was sold saying it was the spindle nut for a Wadkin.

Accurate drill-sharpening jig for Sorby Pro-edge?

I've seen various reports for the Drill Doctor, both good and bad. I've got a feeling that a lot of the results with any of these type of tools is going to be down to the operator, and that's true of pretty well any kit. Machinist friend said that they had a tool grinder where he worked, but...
