    Help with Stanley Plough Plane

I use a similar one (13-050_, and I find the technique that works for me is to keep the depth of cut very shallow to start off with, and to do the majority of the work with the hand on the fence, and use the hand on the handle to keep it upright. As you get deeper you can start to put a bit more...

    Black & Decker smoothing plane

Technically, it's the other way around. Stanley and B&D had been looking at each other for many years, it wasn't until 2010 that Stanley had enough cash to buy B&D. Stanley are more focused on dividends and lists than B&D was. Makes it a drearier place to work now than it was before.

    18v tool brand choice

For what it's worth. Chucks are purchased sub assemblies that are just mounted to the tools. So these would be cost and quality driven, rather than brand driven. A lot of the Stanley tools when Stanley bought B&D were re-skins of B&D products.

How would you wall mount this?

A long time ago I 'temporarily' mounted a cd shelf to the wall using these brackets (7 years and 300 cd's and it's still going strong). Granted, the CD's hid the brackets when the shelves were full, but it may be an option if you can find some smaller brass versions (Robert Dyas for example, and...

    Suggestions Please - Curved Wood

How thick does it need to be? Assuming it's 1cm, and it's just visual, not load bearing, then cut from a thick piece if you have it (use that plywood curve as a template so that you can cut both sides), or make an oversized piece and then cut the curve (either as with making small wheels...

Best way to replicate this 'bowtie' style on vertical supports for bookshelf?

With only hand tools, I would think, well, do I need to have the curve all the way across the verticals, or can I just shape the front third. Less work, still not a boring straight design, and doable with hand tools.

    Great Rejoinders

Another one I enjoy using is when other engineers come up to my desk and say 'I have a problem', I reply with 'Go and see the doctor then, he will give you some cream for it'. The more I use things like that, the less people bother me

    Great Rejoinders

And for those that can remember it, from Glompus Van DeHload's Tales from the Crypt. 'Sir, this has just come through the letterbox' ; 'What is it?' ; 'It's an oblong hole in the door for the mail sir.' 'Right Porno, I'll show the commissioner just how smart I am' ; 'You get the ruler sir, I'll...

    Great Rejoinders

Ones I like to use in the office here, which seem to cause consternation with some of the younger folks are. To: 'Can I ask you a question?' I reply 'You just have.....' To: 'Can I interrupt you?' I reply, 'You already did.....'. To: 'Can I have a question?' I reply 'Certainly, whats the square...

    Teach me about pocket doors

My thoughts. I personally think a visible sliding door adds more character, I have made some for colleagues in the past and they work really well where they don't want a hinged door. They also did a hidden door, from a kit, for an en-suite kids bathroom ( i ended up making that door for them as...

    Shortening timber

Butt the end up to a larger piece, use that as a guide. Mount it to a longer piece that you can use to reference the longer side of the stock. Stick on some shim if you need to move the saw out a little bit. As long as it's flat and square, and square to the longer piece, you will start a flat...

    Does anyone forage for Mushrooms?

Picking wild mushrooms is something of a national past time over here in Czech. So, if you happen to know any Czechs, Poles, Slovaks etc, it is well worth asking them if they picked mushrooms in the past. They may be able to help with identifying, recipes, and even be company on the next trip...

Stanley 78 rebate plane thread size

For what it's worth, I reached out to a colleague or two, and we found a print for the fence that was an M5 thread, dated Dec77. The fence casting has Made In England embossed on it. But I don't know if this was just a redrawing because of a transfer of manufacturing location, or if it was...

    Cordless Batteries.

An additional warning for those who use adapters. Different manufacturers have different numbers of terminals on the battery packs, and often these are used for safe charging, rather than safe tool running. A DeWalt 18V zodiac battery for example will use two large and two small terminals on the...

    Selling stuff (again)

Any way to angle them towards the local tourists (assuming they are around)? Or maybe put them behind the bar of your local, double the cost and label them as 50% goes to the local charity of choice?

No 78 is still made and for sale. Maybe worth looking at calling a Stanley / DeWalt service center and asking them.

Automatically switch on a extractor when a tool is powered on.

I use a master slave 3 socket extension lead by Stanley. Works well enough for my small workshop. I picked it up a few years ago on a trip to the UK, so I expect that something similar will be available in B&Q or similar. Google "Stanley Master / Slave extension".
