    I've bought a Peugeot for a fiver.

That's my kind of project ! ..& that is the plane I'm missing too as I have a wide, ugly, warped board to work one day..which I paid far too much for but that's another story. Thanks CC

Drawbored vs Through-Wedged Mortice & Tenon

I've just read up on 17th century stool making which relies on drawerboring as no glue is used & those last for 100's of years & an old dowel took 45minutes to extract from a stool being reconditioned - but the stools are obviously not used in combat. The book discussed axes & battle axes &...

    Infill Smoothing Plane Project

Can I ask how much you paid for the sheet/plate metal ? Are the brass ones only cast & not dovetailed?.. (melting down all my plumbing scrap might be pushing it ..) I'll have a few dummy runs with wooden planes first as the frog/mouth maths/geometry seems trickiest to me although infilling is...

    Mum's & memories

Heirlooms are precious no matter how invaluable or ugly they may be or what they are made of.. it is sentimental but not overly so. Their smell alone can transport you back decades to a sweeter time (?) & are a solid, tactile connection to a loved one & that is a very strong emotion. If that...

Cutting down engineered/veneer doors to size

If it's a quite heavy, solid core door like I used to help make (in my fisrt job after leaving school) then the core is stable all by itself & the veneer & lipping is just cosmetic, however you say it's glazed so this might weaken the core depending on how that's been done (how big & how close...

    I've bought a Peugeot for a fiver.

..it'll have to wait for my skills to improve but that's the idea, although I'd not thought of a scrub plane..best find out what 1 is now. Thanks Andy & Richard for confirming my suspicions but I didn't think it was so much more expensive than UK finds.. blimey. It will have to turn to dust...

    Craft work is NOT creative!!!!!!!!!!

T0ssp0tts one n all. Yet again we have wallies messing about trying to reorganise something that someone else had reorganised before that & so on & so on....do these beaurocrats have some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder ? When we get out of this recession it will be inspite of them...

    Mum's & memories

Great story all round. That generation were very sparing with their praises. They won't say it outright but hopefully through some sort of gesture or an ask for a favour to make something (because they know you will do it & do it well) you will know you're appreciated. I saw something..or did I...

    I've bought a Peugeot for a fiver.

Yes it's massive..my mistake that is.. 41.5mm. Now I see that there's a darker colour to the underside (edge side?) that runs out just after the bulge.. this is only of passing interest as I too think that as long as it works it'll be a bargain. Thanks for the links Andy but mon francias est...

    Infill Smoothing Plane Project

Wow, wow, wow ..I am seriously impressed. I've got the infil making bug thanks to you & Richard T. ...why didn't you mill the dovetails too with the sheet on it's edge? (more stoopid questions may follow) Togs

    I've bought a Peugeot for a fiver.

Hello Gents, I'm in Provence/Rhone Alps, South of France for the week & could not resist a look around a Jumble Sale & found a few nice things (& a lot of very distressed (ok knackered) woodies with very badly 'sharpened' or rusted blades which were left alone). I did get this Peugeot Freres...

    cutting thin stainless steel

I'd agree with that..but I'm often wrong. If you do go for it anyway wear lots of PPE & keep loved ones & pets well clear too. A good quality, very thin, stainless steel cutting disk does a very good job surprisingly easily_ you could use a guide jig if you are not sure of a straight line done...

    DOL Starter wiring

I;ve a big angle grinder that trips my RCD socket every time as it starts with such a high draw of power but is ok on fused circuits. Although others will disagree with the science (including my Dad who's a sparky) it has been reported on here where such an issue was caused or at least cured by...

Wadkin Planer- 3 Phase to domestic

Hello Will, Apparently you can do it with capacitors.. some chap was on here a while back who was over the moon with getting it to work but I did not follow it up- he got the info from an electric motors book. You could also look to buy a single phase motor. Togs

    farmhouse table

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Practical-Desig ... ure+making This book gave me the confidence to make my dining table with drawers & should have all the info you need to make your mind up about sizing, spacing & shows you about human proportions as well as drawer supports etc. I like this book. I...

    What could I make?

..what is it with women not seeing the bigger picture? If you knew someone who could rip them to 20mm thickness you could make a chest of drawers, bedside cabinets, bathroom cabinets or if not then how about a chunky tv stand or coffee table? Doing anything is better than nothing...

Newbie with a shed building question

Look for free timber if funds are tight ..I know a factory who import metal from the USA in huge great crates made up of 4m x 30mm x 200mm planks - they have to pay to dispose of them & couldn't give them away fast enough the last I knew. This might be rare but it's worth a look for someone...

    Importing Furniture from India

Good luck with dealing with 'businessmen' in that neck of the woods.. you would need a lot of it if you wanted to keep your shirt. This is not unfounded or racism but my opinion based on experience.. I 'd say the same about buying anything secondhand off an old Englishmen. What would be your...
