    Thread to Taper Adapter

Kerrowman, no that will not work, what you need is an adapter with a 3/4 x 16 female thread then either an MT2 female on the other end or a JT2 male taper on the other end to hold the chuck. Option 1 MT2 means you can use any tool with a morse taper Option 2 JT2 means you can use only the chuck...

    Silver Steel

Richard, Silver steel is a tool steel ! very useful material, easy to work when in the annealed (as supplied) condition and easy to heat treat aka harden and temper. Are you making tools for wood turning or metal ? Either way the method is pretty much the same the only difference is the...

    Love a challenge

The answer is yes ! When I was in full time engineering one of the chaps made such items as a hobby selling a few along the way, he eventually left to do it full time, traveled to many shows etc in Britain selling and taking commissions. He did extremely well and his work was top class. If you...

Sharpened drillbits not cutting vol 2

Tom, regarding your last summary: - The chisel point is of no consequence when you have already drilled a pilot hole - the point of you larger drill is not cutting ! Point thinking is only beneficial if you have a thick web and are drilling into solid material. Relief - your grinds look pretty...

    Wire types

Just one point for all to remember, heating galvanised wire or anything else galvanised is not to be recommend, heating such items gives off toxic fumes. You NEVER weld galvanised metals either or never should. Otherwise an interesting technique,!

How do I get this working?

Many years ago as an apprentice always looking to make a extra few bob I used to wheel and deal in small lathes, very understanding boss allowed me to use works facilities! However I came across quite a few treadle lathes and converted them motor driven — my point is that you will need a fairly...

Oak - European V American White Oak

Thank you one and all for the input, pretty much confirms my own thoughts, however it seems impossible to obtain European Oak in the size required although one company has suggested jointing it but not too keen on that and for this application don't like the idea of engineered Oak. Cabinet man...

    What are these?

Steel hole punches, defiantly steel, look at the tempering colours and traces of rust, the other is a diamond glass cutter thus no axel for a wheel. Have one somewhere in "Dad's & Grandad's tool box" diamond is AWOL tools are never used but they were Grandpa's then Dad's -- treasured memories !

Oak - European V American White Oak

I am not sure what the pros & cons are of the two species so would like some comments of our knowledgable team ! The use will be an open plan staircase and have been looking at material for the strings, most suppliers only have 32mm thick, finished, I would prefer it to be 40/45mm and the only...

Hi I have just had a look on search engines and there is a machine M = Manix AES is correct, however regarding a chuck for your Record from the photo's I've seen there seems to be more than one type of spindle nose fitting. All following the same theme but differing register diameters and hole...

Nothing new here my dad was a DR [dispatch rider] in the Signals in WW2 1939 - 1946 and they were issued with a small metal canister , screw cap either end, one with the compound in and the other with a cloth -- used it in my M/cycle days and still have a couple somewhere ! However the other...

    B&D urban myth?

I have not read all the posts but 10mins the OP refers to is most likely the duty cycle i.e. 10mins per hour or 16.66% duty cycle. Most motors welders or other electrical equipment has a duty cycle but of course industrial machinery/motors are designed to run continuously but even then not at...

    Sears Craftsman radial arm saw

First point is it’s 120v so unsuitable for direct mains use ! To use it you will need a transformer with a sufficient power output to supply the correct voltage. If you go down this route do not use a standard U.K. plug, use one of the low voltage plug systems so that it cannot be...

Who can you trust with your data.

Trust nothing, even written data can be fiddled but safer than electronic. I do use Internet banking but not really happy with it and always look at it with suspicion. I never trust any caller from banks, BT etc etc who calls and then wants to “verify my ID” Er no I need to verify your ID ...
