There’s no one way of doing any of these types of operations, one of the best options is to look at the work someone does and if you like it, do what they do, then you’ll be able to make things like that too.
This is why I use shooting boards.
It looks like it’s just a grub screw keeping it on? If so that pretty poor, hopefully there’s a key in there too.
Edit- yes I see the key now
Either way, take the flange off and have it skimmed
The finish covers the wood, so that’s the bit that needs to be safe. If you ate spalted wood you would probably have a problem, but I don’t think the spalted aspect would be responsible!
Cherry goes a lovely dark golden brown if left unfinished, I tend to use sanding sealer and clear wax on mine but then those are cherry parts of other pieces, usually lighter woods
I’ve posted about Makita service before, broken drill gearbox, no receipt… collected fixed and returned in 3-days, they replaced the housings too “as they were dirty”
Could be the machine, but…
That’s laminated board, so one piece might be in an ideal orientation for planing, the piece next to it could be in the worst possible, hence the breakout.
Laminated board is also rarely made from high quality stock.

It does come with a Mafell price tag and they are the only supplier of blades of that...
Your local fabricators can weld up box section quickly and quite cheaply, it’s not for everyone, but so far as stiff and strong goes it’s the Gucci option
You have 30 joints total, but I’m not seeing anymore than 9 that have to be done at once (one row of back splats), are you sure you have to glue everything at once?
It’s a little detail, but an expensive one, the kind of thing that says “I’m not from Ikea”, is the entire end piece one bit of solid timber?
I’ve only made that shape painted and even that took an age to get smooth.
I’d be inclined to laminate but then you’d have to lay up a piece on the...

All the drawers are labelled, there’s brass rubbing straits on the floor, it’s just lovely but is also highly functional
We’ve talked about what we don’t like… what would we pay for?
Personally I can’t think of much that would be better than a video off YouTube from some of the good makers like Doucette and Wolfe or similar (just wish they made things more to my taste). Maybe more of the design options and...
