The shame of a tidy workshop

Just done the first proper clean in 10-years, some things were where I left them from that time. I aspire to tidy, hopefully might be closer to that from now on. Wood doesn’t make a lot of dust if you have decent extraction, I remember someone once saying they don’t understand why people...

    Push sticks again.......

This subject again hey? Well, I suppose it has been over a week… Did you ever have a teacher who said “…and if everyone was jumping off a cliff, would you do that too?”, machinery safety is a bit like that. HSE publishes guidance which should be your reference, anyone can make a YouTube video...

Need some guidance with my wood floor

Let’s presume they’ve read their tenancy agreement We once had one that said we had to return it in the same condition we rented it in, said we can’t as we’ve already started cleaning.

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

That video show that they are using pretty cheap softwood but making high value items from it

Funny hearing your experience, I’ve always wanted to make a bed out of aluminium…

How to plan a new extraction system

I don’t think that’s a particularly potent extractor, you may be best served moving it close to each machine as you need it than fitting a load of ducting that doesn’t deliver a great result

Need some guidance with my wood floor

Put a carpet on it. If you don’t like that look, there’s not much you can do for it

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

If you’re going to do it, don’t cheap out using thinner wood as an economy, the saving will be small and easily forgotten, the compromised design will be there when you go to sleep and waiting for you every morning, every day, always haunting you

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

Many beds don’t put all the load on four corners and have a frame inside the wooden frame that carries the slats and has additional supports to the floor, which seems sensible to me. The thickness of the timbers is less critical than the depth

    Ultrasonic cleaners.

A trick for making best use of more expensive solvents is to put them in a plastic bag with the component and then that bag in the water

    Sourcing Hardwood UK

This is £120 of hardwood purchased recently… and there’s more items not in picture. Yes, I have lots of kit, but I’ve been at this a while now. All of these could be made with £30 of secondhand tools and a bunch of effort. A lot easier with £200 of cheap tools and very little effort with some...

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

Get huge mattress and slats first, or at least make very sure you know their dimensions There is a lot of wood in those beds, are you thinking you will do it cheaper? You might not.

How to plan a new extraction system

Get smaller towards the end. Don’t put more on than your extractor can handle. Minimise obstructions and sharp corners. Poor extraction is better than no extraction. Much is talked about it here, you will find some good info if you search, but it may be well camouflaged

Not all old tools are good tools

Old tools aren’t necessarily good, new ones aren’t necessarily bad. There are literally thousands of types of steel and if you heat them differently they all start changing further still. Most specifications given are borderline meaningless after word “steel”. If you’re wanting to make a safe...

    Sanding Metal--Which Sandpaper to use?

Depends if you are ever going to use said saw? If so, adding something that can peel off, stick to workpieces and add thickness isn’t a great plan. Machinery wax however, works lovely

I’ve found the same thing. Hinge boring bits appear to have more clearance than the forstner bits I have.
