My thoughts were the maximum weight would be 255kg or whatever the limit per leveller was. So if I had 4 that could lift 500kg each then the heaviest cube/object that could be lifted would be 500kg and not 4 x 500kg (2000kg)

If you had 4 air levelling bags that can each hold upto 255kg and you had a cube weighing 1000kg, Could you put one bag at each of the bottom corners or would they burst? I am talking about this sort of thing (Not this one though)...
