    HVLP Sutiable Stain for Pine?

The Xpoly you refer to is probably osmo polyx wax oil. I have used this on hardwoods with very good results but i have never tried it on softwood but i presume it will be ok. You can get tinted osmo wax oil that will tint and finish at the same time otherwise do as dan says and experiment with...

    Mitred Box Clamping

Hi Wizer the Besseys are very good you can exert a lot of pressure with them. I have a couple of cheaper ones but always reach for the Besseys. Because of the adjustable foot on the Besseys you can clamp up hexagons and octagons as well. I would say they are worth the money. Jon

I have a couple of those paramo 52 vices on my bench. I have never noticed any date stamped on them so I will have a look when i am back in the workshop. Jon

    laminated MDF?

I think you will be fine with MFMDF for the carcase but i dont think it will be hard wearing enough for the counter top. I would use a laminate for the top. Jackson building centres will be able to order you in a small number of sheets either from International Decorative Surfaces or James...

    Mitred Box Clamping

i usually use a combination of masking tape and a pair of bessey band clamps. The clamps pull everthing together very nicely. I also use some clamping cauls sometimes to pull mitres together they are basically 25mm mdf pieces with a V groove machined in them clamped onto the work and then you...

    Axminster sale

The machine looks pretty good value at that price. I have a fixed table planer thicknesser (sedgwick MB) and it is great not having to flip ot take of tables to change from planing to thicknessing. The downside of a fixed table (on the sedgwick) is that you can only thickness down to about 9mm I...

What's your 'general purpose' bandsaw blade?

Usually a 1/2 inch 3tpi skip tooth blade for general work. I usually buy 10 at a time to keep costs down and either use starett or Dakin Flathers Blades. Jon

    Metric or Imperial

I work in metric pretty much all the time. The only time i work in imperial is when talking to customers who seem to have no grasp of metric (usually the older ones). jon

    Bandsaw Motors

Hi Chisel I have the same startrite bandsaw as you and i find it okay up to 6 inch depth of cut over that and it struggles a bit. Keep us informed if you find a solution as i am considering changing the motor on mine. jon

    Prices for sharpening

I pay about £9 for 3 12inch blades for my sedgwick to be sharpened. Saw blades are usually priced per tooth expect about £6 for a rip blade and upto £15 for a large fine tooth blade. My saw doctor calls once a week to pick up items to be sharpened and deliver sharpened items. This costs £1.50 a...

    Carving kit

I have found a standard angle grinder with an abrasive disc to be quite usefull when shaping timber P40 is good for rough shaping then P80 to clean up. Can be very dusty though and quite hard to extract the dust efficiently. I have heard good things about the flex cut but have never had the need...

    Phenolic runners

The guide rails that the bearings run on on my panel saw are phenolic plastic. The saw is now about 8 years old and there are no signs of wear on the guide rails so it should be an excellent material for what you want to do. jon

    Domino Question

I cant really comment on the new system but the old style metal pin ones which i have got work really well. My only concern if its a demo model then its probably already a year or so old and has probably been used a fair bit so i would expect a fairly decent discount on it. I was told by the...

    Wenge

I have used it but not for a few years now. The splinters can be a pain but you can get a nice finish from it. I used a A/C lacquer on the bits i made from it and it came out well. You could fill the grain for a super smooth finish but I quite like the open grain. I got mine from Craft Supplies...

    Sash cramps from Rutlands

If you have ordered the ones you originally linked too they are not T bar clamps. They are just copies of the record 135 type of sash clamp with the plain bar. I have some t bars but tend to use the plain ones more. There are times however as mike says when a bit extra pressure is required. Jon
