    Finishing new oak staircase

I am a fan of Osmo Polyx oil which gives a good natural finish that is easy to maintain. I have been finishing my staircases recently with a very similar product from fiddes. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... =1&jump=44 The Fiddes is as easy to apply as the Osmo oil but it seems to...

Some nice work there John. Looks like you will soon be ready to take on a big project such as workshop doors  Jon

    Planer/thicknesser for veneer?

You can get constructional veneers in 1.5 , 2 and 3mm thickness which may be suitable for your project. You could just buy in what you need, it will probably be much easier than trying to make it. Jon

advice please for crved seat tool

I probably shouldnt be posting this in the handtool section as my method is mainly powertool based. I usually use a router to remove most of the waste and then use an angle grinder with a 60G abrasive disc to do the final shaping. It can be used very subtlely once you get used to it. I then...

    CAPITAL CRISPIN VENEER

I can also recommend them. I have used them fairly regularly and found there prices to be competetive. As has already been mentioned It is a lot more expensive to buy loose leaves rather than full bundles. I have always used mail order and recieved excellent service. Jon

Internal ledge and brace ash doors - recommended thickness

You can get Ash (North American) in 1 1/4 inch and in up to 4.5m lengths. You could get two door lengths out of a 4.2m length so minimising wastage. It might be worth trying some local Joinery shops to see what they would charge to supply and plane it for you. There is a company near me that...

Internal ledge and brace ash doors - recommended thickness

I have used both types of Ash in the past and the colour is quite similar UK Ash tends to be a bit more yellow than the whiter American Ash. Although I have found the colour varies from Batch to Batch and sometimes the 1inch boards are a differnet colour to 2 inch boards. What is quite usual in...

Internal ledge and brace ash doors - recommended thickness

If you are buying PAR you are paying a premium and the boards should be flat and straight. If they are badly warped I would send them back. You can expect a little snipe on the ends if its been through a four sider so I would allow a bit on the length needed. Jon

finding a router bit to replicate t & g on damaged ends?

Another option for joining the ends would be this http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/product/B ... 8%29_.html You can do the joints with a normal drill and would be stronger than a biscuited joint. I have never used one so cant comment on how good they are but most trend stuff is pretty good. Jon

finding a router bit to replicate t & g on damaged ends?

You could do it with something like this which would be able to be adjusted to your dimensions. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... rc=froogle It is quite expensive and for best results will need to be used in a router table rather than freehand. Jon

    Beaded Face Frames

I must admit I prefer to mould out of a solid piece of wood the main reasons is that it is quicker once set up. If you are using butt hinges its stronger and If you are doing a solid wood frame there is no problem with colour and grain matching and hundreds of brad holes to fill. Jon

Dewalt 703, Are they any good

I think Dewalt chop saws are very good. I would be tempted to spend £50 or so more and get a Dewalt 707 which offers greater cutting capacity in about the same footprint. http://www.toolstop.co.uk/dewalt-dw707- ... tand-p5243 I know there is some talk on here about sliding saws being less...

    Beaded Face Frames

Looking good Duncan. I have made frames like this for a few years now and once set up it is quite straightforward. I am doing quite a bit of this type of work now and like you I am going to dedicate a router table to making frames and leave it set up. Glad you found my post usefull. Jon

    New router.

I have got the small Festool router OF1010 which is a decent refined machine but i dont think its any better than the Dewalt 621K which I also own which is a lot cheaper. That said they are both excellent machines. Jon

Oak and Black Walnut 6 Draw Chest

Is the top solid oak? If it is I would be a little concerned about movement in the top and the potential to blow the mitred corners. Jon
