    new or second hand

Just tell of all the wonderful items you will be able to make for her if you get a saw. Beware Hegner prices are over the top! Have you considered the Axminster AWFS18 which is a dead copy of the Hegner? I have not tried one but a few on here have, maybe worth asking how they get on with...

    new or second hand

My advice if you are looking for a second hand Hegner is to try to get one with the quick release tensioning lever (picture below) as it is not really feasible to add one later. This lever will make an enormous difference if you do internal cut outs on your work. Also try to get a variable...

A design from the first world war!

That is correct and in the past I have managed to get some quite old ones, however most of the ones offered now are from around the war years (1940's) till 1968 and they rarely had very interesting designs in them. when I say they are not interesting they may be to some but they did not feature...

    Sub tables

I will take some pictures of the table and post them later, the bit of the workshop in the picture is my extension workshop where I do my fretwork and designing etc I have a computer section at the other end. There is a doorway past the band saw on the right which leads to my main workshop. I...

    Sub tables

That is a good point and one which concerned me, which is why I made my table using fairly thin MDF. If you make the table from very thick material it may place the work above the reversed teeth at the bottom. The FD ultra reverse blades solve the problem having a few reversed teeth all along...

    new or second hand

I have never had the opportunity to try an Excalibur saw but TBH I have never found changing blades any trouble at all with the Hegner and with the quick clamp it takes about 2 secs and you can do it with your eyes closed it's that easy. Now with my Diamond saw changing or refitting blades is...

A design from the first world war!

Not to my knowledge and I have been following the Hobbies company since the 1950's The 'new' Hobbies company (a different outfit to the original hobbies who ceased trading in 1968) released a pack of old Hobbies designs but they were only the simpler ones. Most of the original plans were...

A design from the first world war!

Actually they do look a bit like tiles but it is a cutting mat. I can't decide whether to add a dark-wood background to the piece for wall hanging, it will show up the detail and support the work. I may try one tomorrow.

    Sub tables

I have had a sub table on my Hegner for many years, I would not be without it, for starters you can make it a bit bigger for better support of the work and it also helps having a much smaller blade hole. I deliberately slotted mine with a slot just wide enough to take the blade, the reason being...

A design from the first world war!

I just cut it the same way as normal glass, score on the front only. 4 tips when glass cutting 1) Always clean the glass before scoring. 2) place a small amount of 3 in one oil on the cutter. 3) score the line as lightly as possible. 4) Use a normal 6 wheeled cutter, a diamond cutter is more...

    new or second hand

You will get a better saw for your money if you buy a decent second-hand one rather than buying new.

A design from the first world war!

I made this using a Hobbies of Dereham plan The design is number 1017 and it was published on 10th April 1915 when the First world war was in progress! I reckon that this is the hardest piece I have cut in terms of inside cuts there were over 130 bits to cut out on the main frame I could not...

If you want a copy of my design let me know. There is indeed a pan hiding in the corner

    It's a letter rack

It's a letter rack and not an owl in sight! I made it up by using some patterns from an old 1911 hobbies plan, the original pattern was for a sort of wall hanging rack, I scanned parts of it into photoshop then turned it into a table standing rack so it is totally unique though I must admit...

    saw blades

Thin material is very difficult to cut detail. As Summertime says stacking does help, even if I only want one of an item I always stack at least 3 to cut, this makes it much easier by slowing the cutting down, it also usually ensures that at least the middle one in the stack will be good and you...

    It not another owl!

This is the other one I mentioned, not finished yet, has to be cleaned up and varnished.

    It not another owl!

This is what I have been cutting today, not finished properly yet, I have done 3 of these but using different woods, the next one has the main fretwork done in Mahogany with the surround in maple, sort of a negative to the one shown here. I can post a picture of that one if anyone is interested.
