3 phase help required (pretty please)

If this does interest you, then I'm sure a little googling will find you that this has been discovered several times before. Having been involved in a climbing expedition to remote Turkey over 40 years ago, I've spotted several similar reports in those intervening years. Rob

Wd40 for use as a lubricant with scary sharp?

Wizer - as WD40 was originally developed to protect ICBMs in ground based silos from corrosion (at least that's what I've always been lead to believe!), I very much doubt it would encourage corrosion. I think it is an accepted fact that WD40 stands for Water Dispersant No 40 - the 39 previous...

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

I did a re- motoring of my TS some time back when the smoke got out of the old one. The previous motor was a) underpowered and b) not sealed so every so often saw dust got across the centrifugal switch and the starter winding wasn't switched on - the motor just sat there and hummed. It was...

3 phase help required (pretty please)

Karl Are you absolutely sure of your figures there? The reason I ask is that I have a 2.2kw motor on my saw which is nominally 9 amps peak running current and the start up on that on a 16A supply meant that I had to put in a type B MCB to stop it dropping out. And that's with an electronic...

    glue blocks

Can I put in a novice's input on this one please. Having had a rather unsatisfactory introduction to screw chucks - splitting wood, not gripping and so on - I decided to explore glue chucks, and am all in favour of them. Now it may well be that there are more expensive and hence better (?)...

3 phase help required (pretty please)

I don't have Bob's mileage on this topic but I do know a bit about motors, 3 phase and invertors. Don't even consider the single phase option - it;s a non-starter. I doubt you will easily get a single phase 240v motor that will supply 5hp, and if you did, the start up current will makes...

    Giving up the dreaded Weed!!!!!!!

Digit - fairly early on in my pipe smoking career (taken up as two of us students thought it would be cool sitting on top of a mountain and having a quiet pipe - should have remembered that Scots mountain weather is not friendly enough for that) - anyway I was trying the Dutch type tobaccos...

    Giving up the dreaded Weed!!!!!!!

Roy. Hi Roy, the wife has been growing her own fruit and veg for years, the only thing is since we moved to Scotland we cannot grow a decent Cox's Orange pippin, and I love a pippin. Cheers Mike Ah, I thought I'd noticed the smell of *** smoke drop off a bit recently !! I gave up a pipe...

Started an Astro-Physics course - any mathematicians here?

Did 'man' do wood work before he looked at the stars ? Certainly woodwork before astro-physics. Rob

Ah - many thanks for that, Miles. Shows that first impressions are not always the correct ones. Having said that however, the 'selling line' is a bit emotive and having used it for 6 months, I'm sure I'm not the only one with a cynical outlook !! Rob

    Shallow maple bowl

Many thanks, Ad; been using a glue block rather than a screw which I don't terribly like, so that's an easy step on. Cheers Rob

    Shallow maple bowl

Hi Ad I haven't plucked up courage enough yet to post anything I've made, and have felt on occasions that some of the photos fell into the category of "look how clever I am". What perhaps I haven't realised before is to look more carefully at the piece and see how various features can be...

    new bowl - wife's Birthday present :) - comments?

It is surprising how the message about using the roughing gouge does not get across to novices - sorry Miles if you don't feel you're one of those ! I've been turning for about a year (so am very much still a novice) and got ticked off recently at the wood turning club for this form of...

    ebay items

I wouldn't be too convinced by this seller - his selling line has been going for about 6 months now and the amount of wood has been considerably more than I would expect an average turner to have as a built-up stock over the years. It's a bit like the guy who's "clearing out my workshop to make...

    Bowl gouge sizing ?

The Toolpost site just reinforces the oddity as it indicate a 5/8" stock for a 1/2" gouge. This is superflute shape - ie not parallel sides - and is just over 9mm (not even 3/8") at the top of the flute on 5/8 stock. It's a heavy tool and maybe I'm better to use it than pursue a 'real' 1/2"...

    Bowl gouge sizing ?

Well I thought I had this sussed out but I've bought what I thought was going to be a 1/2" bowl gouge off Ebay - it's marked 1/2" by one of the established brands, but the top of the flute is only 3/8". To confuse me more the stock is 5/8". I've already got a 3/8", again a good brand, but it...

    new workshop roof

I'm sure Mr Google will help you. I haven't bookmarked the sites, but I found the recommendations for joist sizes somewhere, and the price of timber in the UK is easily located. Joists (either 6x2 or 7x2) will be around £2.50 /m. From experience of both I favour Onduline over felt - so much...

Advice on plasterboarding a ceiling please

Yep, that's my thinking - I don't think I'm going to get long enough plasterboard screws. I think I'll look at hiring an autofeed screwdriver. Rob

Advice on plasterboarding a ceiling please

Roger You're being a bit dramatic - this is Scotland and even 200 years ago the Scots knew how to build rooves and the corresponding ceiling joists/ roof ties. Everything is regularly spaced, the timbers are 8 x 3 pine and there is plenty of wood to screw to. From the lack of evidence of...

Advice on plasterboarding a ceiling please

Hi Roger Ground floor (of one!), and although the attic is partially floored for storage we rarely go over this section. I've just profiled the inverted ridge and it sticks out fully 1", tapering out over about 18". The ceiling in general is cracked so must be dealt with. One of the...
