    Electric vehicles

Tesla aren't the only ones making fast chargers, and it isn't as if there is a total lack of chargers in the area... As they don't have a scale on their maps (rather dumb lol)- here's a google maps shot of the same area for those unaware of the distances involved... with a distance scale top...

    Electric vehicles

They all tend to look similar- because aerodynamics means they all have a similar shape (ICE and EV) to maximise their efficiency, and 'extreme' vehicles tend to be unpopular (I like EV's, but OMFG- there's no way in hell I'd buy a 'Cybertruck'- talk about 'fugly'... looks like a stealth fighter...

    Electric vehicles

There's a lot of dodgy info being put out about EV's and their charging needs... Most countries won't need to expand their existing grid capacity at all, as EV's will mostly be charged at night (either with onstreet EV parking, or off street parking) when existing demand is low (the average...

Keeping things dry in me little workshop

You can actually reuse those 'tubs' of silica gel beads- once they have absorbed as much as they can (weight them before opening, and after a few weeks they will hit their maximum absorption of about 30% more by weight...) Just bake them in the oven on a low heat setting until they regain their...

    Roof overhang limits

It pays to check carefully, as they can be (in Australia at least) EITHER size (our 'local' Bunnings carries them in both sizes for example)- basically the smaller 1200 x 2400 is the 'metric' sized, while the 1220 x 2440 is the old 'imperial' sized sheets in metric measurements (it's a right...

Help me with my first ever mig welds, why do they look like Swiss cheese and will I ever improve (cry for help after being demolished on Reddit)

I'm in Aussieland, and here we have 'TAFE' colleges that do 'night' or weekend short courses that are run several times a month in many cases, very cheap indeed plus plenty of others doing 'home handyman welding courses Even the local Bunnings (the largest of our aussie hardware chains) holds...

    AI, trolls and internet forums

Some of the bigger Q/A forums introduced 'AI questions' in an effort to boost traffic (dumb as they were easily spotted at first, and drove many existing members away) and now you have the crazy situation of AI asking 'questions', with other AI 'answering them' (and usually getting it completely...

Help me with my first ever mig welds, why do they look like Swiss cheese and will I ever improve (cry for help after being demolished on Reddit)

Welding is a learned art- and takes lots of practice to learn lol You have some porosity (usually an unclean surface, and/or gas flow is wrong (usually too low, but a extremely high gas rate can also cause it) and your 'heat'/penetration is too low on the ones on the right- current is too low...

    A wooden bandsaw ... scary ...

I've made my own tools, sometimes for a specific 'need' and sometimes just for the hell of it... Also currently restoring an antique drill press... Is it 'worthwhile??? Hell no- its a close to 100 year old machine thats never going to be anywhere near as accurate as the cheapest of the...

    A wooden bandsaw ... scary ...

Wooden wheels for bandsaws were common in 'the olden days' and still are with DIY made ones- they work remarkably well (even plywood ones lol)- my grandad had a 'homemade ply' bandsaw- as in everything but the blade and motor was wood- and it was still in great cutting shape until long after he...

    Rcd tripping

Still counts as a 'broken ring', and if that happens- bad things can happen :( (for those unaware, the breaker on a radial on 2.5mm should only be 20A maximum (in certain cases only a 16A should be fitted), so by breaking the ring (either by accident or intentionally) the 32A breaker as fitted...

    Rcd tripping

They can also be dangerous... A broken ring can lead to currents in excess of the cables rating (and broken rings are far too common in the UK, as the EICR testing program for rental properties found out...) A ring is usually 2.5mm on a 32A MCB, as long as it is unbroken, thats fine... But if...

    Rcd tripping

Definitely sounds like a 'cumulative load' of multiple earth leakages all adding up to trip the RCD... (especially if you have a lot of things plugged in on multiple spurs or if the workshop is connected to the house ring, as many are...) One advantage of being an Aussie- ring circuits aren't...

Consumer unit cartridge fuse size help

One thing to watch out for, 'some' of the old wiring gets insulation breakdown- looks fine on the outside, but if you cut back some of the outer insulation, its green on the copper and 'slimy' inside- and it can cause the insulation breakdown voltage can go lower (the oily stuff is still 'ok'...

How is your weather and have you experienced any summer yet ?

LOL- dunno yet, hasn't happened, and my crystal ball is on the blink... (being south of the equator, we are just coming out of winter...)

Glue for mending cracked wheelie bin?

Our bins aren't free to be replaced here either.. A real pain, as unless you put it out just before the truck arrives, and take it back in just as they leave- there's a good chance of it not being there when you go back out... Its close to a hundred bucks for a new replacement through council...

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

I (about two years ago) helped a mate put a ironbark fence in (rather than than the gumtree posts I put on my own property)- the chainsaw had to be sharpened daily, and the fencing staples for the wire- well, mine I just hammered them into the posts, his- we had to drill pilot holes for each and...

    Nearly got scammed

Facebook is currently riddled with scammers (usually offering ridiculously low prices on stuff, like laptops for $10...) Ones like that are obvious, but some- less so... This isn't even on marketplace - these are paid ads... appearing in peoples feeds...

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

Here in Australia- Ironbark.... Its a great timber if you want things to last- insect resistant, lasts half a century or more even untreated- BUT- They don't call it ironbark for nothing... It blunts drills (forget using a spade bit- use twist drills rated for steel lol), saws, chisels...

    GU10s to LED

Ansel downlights have a pretty good reputation with dimmers, but like all LED's they can have issues with 'some' existing dimmers- it really comes down to 'try it and see'- if they work with your existing dimmers- all's good, but be prepared to replace the existing dimmers as well if they don't...
