    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

After a nice walk in the country I set to and had a proper look at the new guides on the machine. As I suspected the supplied guide fixing bracket is too thick and gets in the way. But it is possible to do it without it. Here's the guide offered up to the blade. You can see the mounting hole to...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

The Panhans GL456 guide turned up today, I have only had chance to have a cursory glance at it. First impression is that it will fit, but not sure if I have to do any fabrication yet. As you can see, it is a different beast to the Axminster upgrade guides, but at £130 quid it should be :) I...

Wadkin AGS 10 Affairs and Spares

Typically only the full load current is stated as the in rush current may vary depending on load on start up. At least that's my understanding, that is why different types of MCB exist that can handle different peak currents for the same rated current. From memory I have a 50 amp C type MCB on...

Wadkin AGS 10 Affairs and Spares

The other thing to take into account is inrush current. On start up the motor will take more current, especially if it is engaged in pushing around machinery. My lathe is 7.5hp and I have a 10hp converter, but the lathe is in neutral on start up so no load. I have soft start enabled on the...

Wadkin AGS 10 Affairs and Spares

it doesn't look like a dual voltage motor from the plate. If so and it is hardwired for star and 415v then you have (at least!) 3 options. First is swap it out for either a dual voltage 3 phase so you can use a cheaper 240v VFD or a single phase motor. Secondly, use a 240 to 415v converter...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

A friend drove my car to pick up the bandsaw as I am still awaiting my license back from DVLA after surgery, any time now I hope! We used his small plant trailer with fixed sides and the bandsaw was put on the trailer without a pallet by the seller. This made it difficult to unload, I couldn't...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

Panhans lower guide bought from Scott & Sergeant. It looks like it should fit, standard equipment on more modern Wadkin machines. I shall find out if it will fit at the weekend. I also bought the right shade of hammered paint from Bitec coatings, just in case I need it

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

Cheers Chris. I've been doing a bit of research, the guides that Wadkin and other sell are made by Panhans. They also make some more generic guides in two sizes, both top and bottom. Scott and Sergeant sell them, not cheap but look a lot like they would fit easily, I shall give them a call. I...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

Checking the diagrams, the 5/8" bar doesn't have a slot in it, but it does have a shaft with an eccentric end like part no 78 in the following diagram primarily so you can move the guides from side to side. That means sticking the 5/8" bar into a four jaw chuck and purposely setting it off...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

One thing I can confirm is that the top guide of the Axminster upgrade set doesn't fit the Startrite 351, I've heard it fits the 352 but its just that bit too big for the 351 and wouldn't be worth modifying. Plan was to fit the lower guide to the Wadkin and the upper to the Startrite. I think I...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

Axminster are very good at delivering, I ordered within 15 minutes of their next day service deadline but opted for the standard delivery and the kit arrived this morning. First impressions are quite favourable for the money, top and bottom for about 2/3rd the cost of the just the bottom C500...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

I had a bit of a brainwave, I have been considering the Axminster guides for the Startrite 351 and the lower guide looks eminently adaptable to the Wadkin so ordered a set. Worst case is that they will just end up on the Startrite. It's sounds like the bearings are cheap however I have boxes of...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

I picked it up earlier, after days of sunshine it decided to rain but it was light rain and a short journey, everything now dried off and covered in DWD40. I saw it running before I picked it up, it sounded very sweet and once turned off it went on far ages so I think the spindle bearings...

They're coming don't worry :) I hope to pick it up Friday morning.

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

I've done a bit of research and it seems guides are available, about 110 quid for a complete new top or bottom if I need them. it didn't cost a lot and is nearby so can pick it up so don't mind spending a few bob on it. I may just replace the bearings as typically they are just standard bearings...

    Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw

I just bought a Wadkin 20" BZB bandsaw, 3 phase, ex school machine. I'm picking it up at the weekend. Probably needs a little bit of TLC but its a worker. I'm going to use it in the downstairs barn to resaw the big planks of oak and other wood I have from getting trees planked before taking them...

    Cannels - anybody know why?

In that case you can probably translate my old boss's sick notes. When he wanted a couple of days off he would put in a sick note with "plumbum pendulitis" as his sickness on it. His boss never twigged that he meant he was swinging the lead :) Evidently that saying comes from lazy sailors who...

Making some wood polish potions with the kids

We eventually got around to it today, the kids loved it And the fruits of their labour, scented with lemon, orange or pine needle oils. Notionally with different ratios of liquid paraffin and beeswax but not enough to make much difference as I just want this for when sanding on the lathe...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

The bad news was that I had bored it out about 0.5mm off centre and slightly more on the otherside as the reamer deflected. so off kilter too. The good news is that a chap on the MIG welding forum pointed me in the direction of these, a 19mm to 24mm sleeve. This typically allows an 80 frame...

Making some wood polish potions with the kids

Thanks for this :) I have lots of ingredients now to play with, not all when the kids are about. I have BLO, unboiled linseed, proper turpentine, liquid paraffin from the agricultural shop, tung oil, danish oil and possibly some others lurking in old tins. In terms of wax I have unrefined...
