    Planer Thicknesser Choices

It can be a bit of a waiting game / hunt to get one at the right price. If you watch ebay there will be some from dealers that are listed at, say 2k, which will be on for weeks or even months at a time. There will be some auctioned from private sellers or small businesses which go for much...

    Planer Thicknesser Choices

I briefly had the Jet 310 (very similar to the 260 just bigger) and after 2 defective motors sent it back and bought an old Sedgwick MB. The Jet's chip extraction was vastly superior to the Sedgwick and I think it was quieter. However I seemed to get a better finish with the Sedgwick and...

How best to apply danish oil after planing smooth?

I laughed out loud when I read this! Wonderful image of someone waking to mumble a load of incoherent nonsense before drifting back off to sleep. No offence meant to the OP, just entertained by Jacobs turn of phrase. I was talking to someone who runs a successful joinery company recently who...

Sort out your workshop the Japanese way

Agreed. I certainly did not wish to imply that, merely to point out that his use of language may be considered offensive by some.

Sort out your workshop the Japanese way

Deema. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make apart from demonstrating that you are totally out of touch with the modern world. And it's hardly a new 'PC' idea that the term 'Jap' is offensive. Read the links I have posted and you will see that it has been considered so since WW2. I...

Elektra beckum 260 P/T chip chute size?

I used to have one of these and found that this charnwood one worked well when surfacing. http://www.charnwood.net/products/product/dust-collection-hood-250mm-x-110mm-dh250/category_pathway-150 Mine came with a guard/chip chute for use when planing. Mike

Best way to haggle over timber?

If I want nice boards I buy from a local (and rural) joinery and furniture company that also saw and dry their own British timber. Luckily I know them well enough they they will leave me to sort through their stocks to choose what I want and I suppose this doesn't waste their time either. Having...

Best way to haggle over timber?

Have you got any comparable prices to determine whether you actually are being shafted? You could always phone a couple of suppliers to get an idea of pricing. The only way I have found to reduce the volumetric price is to buy a decent quantity!

    Brexit and woodworking

A large timber supplier near to me has apparently put their prices up 15% since the vote. And it's not just the European timbers so I guess this is currency related.

    bench ideas.

And here's mine. Top is a mix of C16 edged with beech. Base is redwood. Legs are approx 150x100 and stretchers are 150 by 50ish. Pegged M&T construction. I intend to add an extra bit of bench top to fill in the tool well which I find to be a nuisance. The observant amongst you will notice...

ISO Flat toothed saw blade for tenons

I agree. I cut tenons as described by Woodbrains. And my rip blade isn't flat topped either. The position of the shoulder is dictated by the cross cut so the height of the cheek cut only needs to be in the ball park rather than dead on.

ISO Flat toothed saw blade for tenons

It would make a bit of a mess. You need a blade with pointy teeth for cross cuts.

ISO Flat toothed saw blade for tenons

http://www.fine-tools.com/kreissaegeblaetter.html Dieter Schmidt does a flat tooth rip blade in 250/300/350 diameters but not with the kerf width you want

Thanks Chippy. That's helpful. I'd be planning to get them from M&D following a previous heads up from this forum.

    Hinge fixing in MFC

Hi All, I'm putting together some built in cupboards for our neighbours. The carcasses will be Egger MFC. What is the best way to fix the hinge mounting plates? Are the 'Expando' fixing versions better than using a chipboard screw? I've seen a fair few hinges coming away from mfc carcasses in...
