joints opening on a table top

Sorry to hear about your woes. Also sorry to say that you may be better off re-making the top - once the timber has acclimatised indoors and stabilised (stopped shrinking). It could shrink by another 1-2% and may distort depending on the cut of the boards. This seems quite likely as well given...

Arsenic was banned from use (in preservatives) in 2004 by the EU so treated timber no longer contains arsenic. Brian

    face planing long boards

Think of it this way; if you had a (not too long) piece of timber with a slight bow and you start to plane the convex face - once you have started the cut and transfer the downward pressure onto the outfeed table you would see the other end wouldn't be in contact with the infeed table. Brian

    Prepping sawn ash

That's how I do it but I generally rough cut it and leave for a few days before finish planing in case there is any residual stress in the cut pieces. If it's too big to handle I tend to use my jigsaw to rough cut the pieces but you tend to get more a little more wastage. Brian

    Help With Pine

I agree with Mike but also, if your workshop is in the shed/garage the wood will never dry sufficiently for use indoors. It's best to bring it inside to acclimatise before taking it back to the workshop to work on. I'd also avoid using single wide boards - better to glue-up narrower boards to...

    face planing long boards

Unless they are badly out it doesn't matter that the tables are not perfectly aligned. Your only reference that matters is the outfeed table relative to the cutter head. Planing 8 foot boards will always be a challenge but I have managed (with some difficulty, admittedly) to do so on a smaller...

    Sap Wood and 'none' sapwood.

Hi Wayne If you look at the cross-section of a mature tree, such as oak, you should see a dark inner core (heartwood) surrounded by a lighter ring of wood below the bark. This is the sapwood and as the name implies it is the part of the tree where the sap rises (to the leaves in the canopy). In...

    I have completed my website!

If you haven't got Photoshop an excellent free image editing package is FastStone. The main program - Image Viewer - has a very good editing capability or you can just download the Photo Resizer. I highly recommend it. Brian

Help with wood identification - with more photos

Frugal I'm going to regret this but can you post a picture of the end grain - a good clean cut surface showing the growth ring detail? I asked about the greasy feel given the reference to oak - as it was from an auction I wondered if the description came from stock records which may have had...

planer jointer axminster 1520- jet 12 bench top thicknesser

I own both and for the money I can't fault them, although it would be nice if they were a bit quieter! My only concern with the thicknesser is the dust extraction port. It's only about ~40mm and although it converts to 100mm hose it does have a tendency to get backed up with shavings and gets...
