    Copal Varnish

Thanks for the link. I'm thinking of trying it on furniture, just want to experiment a bit really and see what it's like. Maybe I'll have a play with some of that....

    Copal Varnish

I think commercial yacht varnishes are all based on synthetic resins in oil now, unfortunately. The old varnishes used natural resins (copal, dammar, rosin and others) dissolved in the oil.

    Copal Varnish

Hi, does anyone know if it is still possible to get hold of traditional oil-based resin varnishes (ie copal or similar) in the UK at a sensible price?

    Flattening machine tables

I'm liking this epoxy levelling idea. Are there any obvious downsides/potential problems with doing this? Can anyone recommend any brand names?

    Flattening machine tables

It's not .05, it's over .5, which is quite a lot! I know a bandsaw is capable of the accuracy I need, as I've used ones that were that accurate. — a heavy bandsaw that can tension a wide TCT blade is quite a different beast to the usual light-weight ones..... Time is money! That would help...

    Flattening machine tables

Thanks for the link Macros, very interesting! Jacob: Sensible idea, but doesn't work in this case — I tried it but the fixings are in the wrong place.... The tapered dowel idea is potentially a good one and would help will have a think about that! The fence is attached to a bar which has...

Thanks, it's just over .5mm out of flat across the width (see pic):

    Flattening machine tables

Just noticed this new forum — brilliant! Just wondering if there is an economic way to flatten cast iron machine tables that are warped? My bandsaw was ex-demo and the table has never been flat. I've been quoted a silly price for a new one. Would be great it was possible to fix the one I...

Acid etching saw blades.... Check this one out.....

A little bit of rust there, but nothing a good hard sanding can't sort out ;-)

    bench (and sharpening)

I think a lot of this discussion really comes down to the fact that people have different levels and patterns of energy, and so arrange things in different ways to suit their particular needs. For example some people are quite 'high energy', or their energy comes in a fairly steady stream...

Copper boat nails shouldn't darken the oak and look great!

    Workbench top glue

.... or if you want to use a PVA you could try Titebond Extend: http://www.titebond.com/product.aspx?id=d7c6f86b-93cc-4400-99ed-79f8a75a2e95 But there's a lot to be said for gluing up in stages

    Workbench top glue

+1 to that, I find them a total PITA for exactly those reasons. Another vote for cascamite from me!

My friend has one and it smells quite nice. A sort of gentle fried food smell — really!

WIP — Traditional Screw Veneer Press

Damn I should have thought of that :D I've managed to get the trestles done in the last two days. I used 3 x 4 ash. I was ordering a load of ash anyway for the cross bars, so I decided to make the trestles from the same stuff. I cut a load of 'quick and dirty' twin mortise and tenons...
