    Quangsheng / Dakota hand planes

I've got a QS number 7 from WSH and it's a joy to use. There was a slight problem with the first one sent out and they arranged a courier next day to deliver a new one and pick up the old one. Spot on on all regards (including price).

    Axminister Event

I have struggled with stock the last two times I've been in to store. They've posted out two star knobs to me today which cost less than a pound each...that must have cost them money. I hope they get this sorted soon before the goodwill they've built up is eroded.

    newbie, hardwood merchants in wirral

:) John Harrison. My mate found him through his eBay shop and we've bought loads from him now. I think he gets remaindered stock (he'll sometimes have a load of moulded skirting in oak for example, or t and g floorboards), so it's more esoteric than Potters, but he has a large stock in and...

    newbie, hardwood merchants in wirral

Welcome to the forum, there's a cracking guy in Wrexham whose name escapes me at the moment. He supplies good quality hard woods, planed if asked, at very competitive prices (much cheaper than Potters). He has a lot of his wood out on racks at Bryn Y Gog, which is an interesting...

    workbench "holdfasts"

Blighty, I had a blacksmith lesson in Barnton, near Northwich. Google Barnton Forge. Very interesting it was too (although it convinced me to stick to wood).

    workbench "holdfasts"

They are extremely useful for lots of jobs at the bench and I use mine daily. I have a set of Richard's and a copy made by a blacksmith from one of his originals. Whilst the copy works, it is not as good because a) the finish is rougher and b) it does not spring/clamp quite as well. I know...

Courier on New Year's Day? Which company was it, do you know?

    Bobbin sander

I eventually bought the Jet bobbin sander and I'm extremely happy with it. It's quiet (much quieter than the extractor), runs true, the extraction is superb and I can see me using it all the time.

    "When it rains it pours"

Good grief, that's a lot of tools! I can see why you want to get rid - it must be difficult to get in your shed. Look, I'll help you out and store them for you if you want? I'll even drive down and pick them up. ;)

This may not be scientific, but is the answer 'steam'?

    Help with wood log drying/sealing

Think of logs as bundles of straws which lose moisture more quickly from the ends, often causing them to shrink and split if left to their own devices. Ideally, the idea is to split the logs down the middle and remove the middle bit (pith). Then paste up the ends with anything (old paint or PVA...

    Bobbin sander

Steve, no probs mate. John, thanks for that. Does it work ok and do you feel the lack of a tiltng table?

    Bobbin sander

Wake, I'll let you know. I suspect I'll be getting the Jet one on the basis that it's better to stretch and buy the best you can. Axi are supposed to have a clearance sale on today, but no sign so far...

Work in Progress - Bench Update

With regards the brackets, you could easily make wooden guides with slots morticed to match your wooden battens that will slide out. Then screw the guides in place (2 per batten) and Robert's your mother's brother.

    Bobbin sander

Thanks PAC and Mike. Is noise likely to be a deal-breaker do you think? Has anyone got one of the cheaper ones who could comment? Mike, does the lack of oscillation make a big difference?

    Bobbin sander

Some of the items I have made for Xmas presents this year would have been much easier to finish with a bobbin sander, so I am now in the market for one. Looking around, there seems to be numerous similar ones at around £130 (of which the Sheppach has caught my eye) and then the Jet for £360...

Work in Progress - Bench Update

Legs would work, but that's not what I meant. Battens that slide out from under the benchtop, supporting the shelf when needed, then slide back under when you want to fold the shelf down again.

    axi sale

Not taking away from those who always go for the cheapest (it's often my basic criteria for selection as well), but there is more to selling than price. Good customer service is obviously another (and often mentioned with Axi), but there is also 1- supporting a British company, 2 - superlative...
