    Astonishing architectural wood carving

We visited the temple yesterday. As per the OP, it's stunning. I felt humbled by the skill that had gone in to it. Well worth a look, and the staff were very welcoming.

mains-powered drill - brush and armature repair?

Hi Thanks for the reply. I've just ordered some brushes, hopefully that'll do the trick. The cost of a replacement armature is 2/3 the price of a new drill (!), so will see if the brushes sort it. Cheers

mains-powered drill - brush and armature repair?

Hi My Black and Decker mains drill has started making an odd noise, and an odder smell. It's been diagnosed for me as worn brushes (I'm surprised the thing has lasted as long as it has). Anywho, I'm currently looking for some replacement brushes, but how can I tell if the armature is...

    It isn't easy...

Good luck with it. The aggravation is well worth the satisfaction once complete.

    petrol lawnmower (Briggs & Stratton)

Thanks all for the replies. As a quick update, an hour at the weekend saw the fuel tank flushed and the carb de-gunked, and it fired up on 2nd pull of the cord. Well chuffed, for a mower that came from the dump. And best of all, I mowed front and back gardens in a fraction of the time it took...

    petrol lawnmower (Briggs & Stratton)

Hi I've just got a petrol lawnmower for the first time (2nd hand). It mentions on their website about using fuel stabilizer, to stop the petrol (or gas, as they prefer) from going stale. Do people bother with this? Happy to buy some if it really is helpful/needed, and equally happy to save...

Danish oil on bathroom door? & plough plane for adjusting?

Thanks - I should really have figured out the plane for myself - doh!! I've been doing the ones with the pinned-on stops first. Nice and simple, just makes a mess of the paint work. Thanks again

Danish oil on bathroom door? & plough plane for adjusting?

Hi, I'm currently fitting some reclaimed panel doors. These will be finished with danish oil. My question is - is 3 or 4 coats of this suitable for the inside (i.e. bathroom side) of the bathroom door? It's described on the tin as being a waterproof finish, but wondered if you esteemed lot...

    Starting Out

Perhaps pick a project or 2 (something of use and interest to you), and investigate the possible techniques that could/should go in to making whatever it is. I found trying things first-hand quickly highlighted where I needed improving, and thus what needed further study. And making stuff is...

Monty Don's craft show (woodworking) SPOILER

I enjoyed the prog - wasn't sure Monty brought much to the table (no pun intended), other than snide comments.

I love yew, I love yew more

Is that a chainsaw with a milling attachment, or are the two parts inseparable? I.e. can such a get-up be fixed to a regular chainsaw, or is that a specialist piece of kit? I'd love to work with great big waney slabs like that. Lovely.

    wood planing advice

When I made my O/H's chopping board (which was made from different-coloured timbers, to create a pattern), I made it in two halves, so they could each be planed flat on my 6" jointer/planer. I then glued the two halves together, taking care to glue them in as near to the perfect place as...
