Most used thing you have ever made.

My bookcase has been in constant use since the day it was finished, but that feels like cheating as I don't touch it daily. So, probably a bread board.

Internal ledge and brace ash doors - recommended thickness

Thanks for that. Can I also ask, on the toilet door, are those 15 or 18 inch hinges? Lovely work, by the way.

Internal ledge and brace ash doors - recommended thickness

Hi Apologies for dragging up an ancient thread, but I stumbled across this whilst investigating brace and ledge (or just ledge doors). I intend making some, but read with interest that braces aren't necessarily required on internal doors. Mike - do you have any pics (or can you point me to a...

    Robinia Pseudoacacia for furniture?

Thanks all for the replies, reckon I'll give it a try. My stuff tends to be a little rustic (both in design, and in execution :) ), so if the wood ends up a little wibbly, then no harm done. I need to build a kitchen and a bed. I'll try it for bedroom furniture, ads nothing steamy happens in...

    Robinia Pseudoacacia for furniture?

Hi I have found a local source of Robinia Pseudoacacia (aka black locust or false acacia). Is there any compelling reason why I shouldn't use this for furniture? By that, I mean in terms of toxicity, or that it is wildly unsuitable. I don't mean in terms of my p!ss-poor joinery... :D Thanks

Getting into Woodwork - scared of wood

Bigger B&Q branches sell waney edged oak boards, at various lengths (for a fixed price per board). Yes, it's an expensive way of buying, but it's convenient and can/may take some of the perceived intimidation/stress out of buying for the newbie, and offers something other than PAR redwood. I...

    Workbench top?

I used multiply sheets of 19mm ply for my latest bench. I didn't glue them together, because when the top gets dinged and dinked to the point of needing replacing, I can just flip the top sheet over. When that gets bad, I can swap it for the next one down... Nice and flat, and sturdy. Storing...

    Sourcing wood

I've had a few bargains from here in the past. Not been there for a couple of years though, as I no longer live in the area. https://www.oxfordwoodrecycling.org.uk/

Replacement spring required - but what to search for?

Thanks all. I figured it would probably be a pain to find one, so a set of 4 new ones seems to be a sensible approach. I'll give the trampoline springs a try, and if that doesn't work, then try some of the mentioned specialists. Thanks again.

Replacement spring required - but what to search for?

Hi In my family is a vintage rocking horse that I and various others played on. It's a tin(?) horse that attaches to a tubular steel frame via 4 springs. However, at some point one of the springs has gone missing, so I either need to find a suitably sized replacement, or a set of 4. Googling...

    Myford jointer/planer age

Thank you. Watching my dad was what got me in to woodwork, so it's great to hear similar stories

    Myford jointer/planer age

Hi Yes please, that would be very interesting. Do the instructions give a model number or name? That could be handy to know. Many thanks

    Myford jointer/planer age

Hi Purely out of interest, can anyone tell me the age of my new toy. It's cast iron, with a 3-cutter 5 inch blade. Overall, it's about 3'. I've not used it yet as I need to build it a bench (the motor mounts remotely), but I'm looking forward to playing. Thanks

    Clock mechanism

Apologies if you are looking to go a more trad route, but the simple electric mechanisms can also have a "tick". Obviously not as classy as a nice mechanical set of innards, but cheap and easy...

    Oven blown!!

Agreed re the above. An previous oven of mine needed a new element. At approx £60, it wasn't cheap, but a lot cheaper and easier than a new oven.

    Drilling and Tapping Up

I had to drill out some hardened steel bolts (seized suspension components on an old truck). HSS wouldn't touch it. but cobalt bits sailed through. I've bought both decent branded ones, and the cheap ones from Toolstation, and been happy with both.

Farmhouse style table - general advice requested!

Can I have your house please? Good luck with the table. I completely agree re old, characterful wood. The reason I like wood is no 2 bits are quite the same (except maybe for bookmatched veneer). If you're making to you and your OH's taste, then good for you.
