Router Table Insert - Group Buy

This is too good to miss, even though my workshop is in no way ready for any additional equipment. Could you put me down for a Mild Steel set please? I can drill and tap. Edit - it won't let me vote.

    Matilda Bow Saw.

Nice. What did you use for the actual blade?

    Router table insert

Could someone sanity check something for me? Just working out how easy or difficult mounting the router will be. Anyway .. my question is how critical is it to centre the router on the plate? As I see it, that centring won't ever affect the accuracy of the work, but just needs to be...

    Cheap planes

Correct, they're breaking the law if they don't. It doesn't just apply to online shops either, it also applies to any web site that's promoting a business even if it doesn't accept electronic orders.

Router Table Insert - Group Buy

Hi, can I ask what the cut-off date is for orders? My workshop's all to pot at the moment so rationally the last thing I really need is more equipment. On the other hand it might be silly to pass up the chance.

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

What did you use to dye/stain the handles? It looks almost black. Something I'm working on just now I could do with getting the wood really dark.

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

That's the idea with the spear pointed knives. Well, my plan anyway. Right and left hand on the same blade with one face flat.

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

Not at all, don't give that a thought. Blanks and ferrules don't give me a problem, it was just the blade that I had a sort of block about. Thanks anyway ...

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

I hope you didn't break it just for me! Yes, if you've got a bit of blade to hand then that would be welcome.

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

Thanks for the responses. I should be able to find a scrap jigsaw blade or two, that's a good idea.

    Cheapskate Marking Knife Idea(s) Wanted

Hi, I've quite fancy one of those spear pointed marking knives, with right and left hand edges on the one tool. Trouble is that I can't bring myself to spend the sort of money that these go for in the posh tool dealers. I sort of think I should be able to make one for free. So I'm looking...

    Plane Hammer

Hi, I'm not a great wooden plane expert, but do you strike the iron itself when adjusting? I only strike the plane body and the wedge.

    Flattening a waterstone

Cheers. Mine went so squint last time I flattened that I've been putting off doing it for a while.

    Shed/Workshop Insulation

Assuming its shiplap or similar construction, there's likely to be a little seepage between the boards in driving rain. If the insulation's hard up against the inside of the boards that wouldn't sound too clever to me.

    Flattening a waterstone

Any tips for keeping the stones parallel as well as flat (if you know what I mean)?

Difference between block and timber frame

I can't understand the original post, unless building is very different where he lives. Around here timber frame is just about universal for new buildings, especially houses. Maybe that fact that block or brickwork is used outside the timber has misled him. Personally my favourite is cavity...

garden gate - most suitable timber and construction method

Hesitate to chip in here, but if the brace bears against the stile, it will be trying to push the mortice/tenon joint open. Shouldn't it bear only on the rails?

Drilling Aluminium Sheet with Woodworking Tools

Agreed. Wouldn't want to spoil the job. Seriously I was thinking best method would to make the plate oversize and screw it down onto a piece of sacrificial board, MDF or whatever's to hand. I would use a fence on the drill table in any case to maintain the hole spacing. It should be...

Drilling Aluminium Sheet with Woodworking Tools

Thanks for both comments. Hole punch would definitely make the hole, I've used them before. They might cause a bit of distortion. I've not used those tapers cutters, but again no reason to think they won't work either. I was hoping to do the job without buying a special tool, but I've just...

Drilling Aluminium Sheet with Woodworking Tools

Hi, Sorry for a metalworking question. Depending on how things turn out, I may want to create an aluminium plate with a series of accurate 14mm holes, 21 holes in total. The metal will be probably 1mm thick. I don't have special metal working tools, let alone machines, but I wondered...
