    Japanese Chisel

Due to a bit of excessive grinding to adjust the profile on a japanese chisel I have ground off the black effect on the metal. Has anybody any idea how it can be restored. Its not the end of the world but it does look a bit odd now and I know that shouldn't bother me but it does :) Owen

Karl thanks for the advice as I think I will approach it this way. I will be housing a plane that i think you sold to me so the help is fitting. Tom I was hoping to avoid you suggestion due to my ability to **** up complex glue ups. Owen

    Tool chest

Sorry to be exceptionally dense here! So the frame is pinned to the front of the box like a face frame or the frame sits inside the box and the frame is chamfered?? Owen

    Tool chest

I have been inspired into action by reading a recent book on tool chest and decided to upgrade my wall mounted storage. It has been in situ now for about three years and in a clam shell wall mounted plywood case (it opens like a book on the wall). while functional I have appeared to collected...

Triffidish tool chest with a nod to JK

I really like the organic way of working I think it makes some interesting designs. That chest looks very nice, i shall watch this build keenly. Not that I know much but sometimes i think being flexible from the original design during construction allows for some interesting developments. Due...

    compulsive hoarder

ohh!!! you have got one of those stanley plough planes where the plastic handle is heavier than the metal plane body. Its the only tool I have felt good about breaking so no one else ever has to use. :) Owen

am I becoming a plane nut?

Its not just planes.. I have about 2 mitre boxes by stanley, some by millers fall, and a craftsman and about six saws that I have aquired. I have no idea why i need them. I just do. The only down side is the saws take a long time to sharpen due to the size of them. Mind you I am selling my...

    Table Saw or Festool MFT?

I would go for the table saw but if you need portability the festool wll be hard to beat. They do sell something to allow repeatability that attaches to the rail. Its not cheap though...

Record 050c Combination Plane - Missing Machine screws!

I have got one of those. It is an odd thread but the same is used for some of the other record plough planes if that helps. I expect it is something like a whitworth thread or some other old school bolt. I expect someone wise will be along shortly. I will have a look later for you in the garage...

    A vice problem

    A vice problem

Not nearly as exciting as it sounds. I recently bought a second hand record 84-34 quick release vice. While it has seen some use it is is in reasonable condition. However it takes about 5 turns of the handle to change from winding in- winding out. I have checked the worm gear and the acme thread...
