I freely admit to being a compulsive hoarder, I'm actually proud of it, (to the frustration of my long suffering wife) and keep anything and everything - well almost :)

Doing a bit of clearing up yesterday and thought "wonder how many planes I have" - result as photos though I've a sneaking feeling there may be even more hiding in the shadows somewhere.

All need work to some degree , some a total refurbishment and at least 1 only good for spare parts. The sorriest and rustiest / broken in the pic with the screwdriver were given by the 75 year old guy next door. the No 5 is exactly 60 years old but sadly has a broken casting.

When I eventually refurbish them all and I will, do I then become a "collector"

Bob

List: inc broken and rusty

*Patsy (brass ornament)
*Record 0120
*Record 03
*Stanley 04 - 3 no
*Stanley 04 1/2 - 2 no
*Stanley 05 - 2 no
*Stanley 05 1/2 - (complete but dismantled)
*Record 078

Sorry, the mere possession of ironmongery like this denotes 'collector' status...re-furb them all and then you could be an uber-collector    - Rob

Does that apply just to planes or do other hand tools such as chisels, hammers, screwdrivers etc. qualify as well? If they do, then I'm well and truly stuffed :?

ohh!!! you have got one of those stanley plough planes where the plastic handle is heavier than the metal plane body. Its the only tool I have felt good about breaking so no one else ever has to use. :)
Owen

Nice start, but it's quite easy to count them, so it doesn't qualify as a collection yet!

It's a long time since I took any pictures of my own workshop - this was over a year ago and shows the start of the plane section

- but it's been extended since!

Don't think it's ever been used Owen.
Was given it but too polite to say I thought it was crap - chucked it in a cupboard out of sight

OOh err missus :?

That's well organised Andy. Most of my lot are just in a drawer

Point is though, that I don't want to be a collector 'cos I've heard that's a slippery slope or something :-"

Drawers are good for planes, but I've not got any photos of the my two, or the other shelves, or the cupboards...

Hi Bob, make contact while you're here - if you've got time.

I'll show you my accumulation....

Cheers, Vann.

Very kind invitation Vann

I'd love to but It's probably unlikely we'll make it as far as Wellington this trip as we only have 12 days in NZ.
We had a very short visit to the south island a couple of years ago so north island only this time but it's squeezed in between Sydney and Brisbane (Noosa) in Oz, so just a taster again really.
We loved NZ last time, so really looking forward to our visit.

Flights have been booked for months but I still need to sort out car hire and accommodation so we haven't decided out NZ touring route yet. Fly into Auckland 17th Nov and back out 30th.

Would definately pm you if anywhere near.

cheers

Bob

Everyone's talking about 'collecting' like it's a bad thing (22 planes...). I need someone to tell me it's NOT a bad thing; there's another 2 car boot sales this weekend...

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

If it is not useful and does not move your soul by how beautiful it is, why is it in your life? …In fact, why constrain this rule to just your house? Apply it to your entire being. Your entire life!

William Morris

William never met a real woodworker did he? (Well I guess he must have, but do we take any notice of him?) 8)

John :D

Yes, but all planes are useful, and some of them are even beautiful!

You've only got a problem when you can stumble across a box of planes that you'd forgotten about.

Onesey-twoseys don't cut it.

BugBear

Funny you should say that BB - when I mentioned the shelves, drawers and cupboards, I did forget to mention the box that is in the way of the cupboard!

But it also contains the reason why counting the things is hard - it mostly has part-planes, and old broken ones which could still yield a useful chunk of beechwood or an adaptable iron. I can't throw that sort of thing out!
