The Axminster AC216TS thread - impressions and tips etc.

I finally managd to get into Axminster for a play with the saw today. First impressions are that it’s quite a nice bit of kit but a shame the side extension is pressed steel rather than cast iron, - it’s bound to add to noise levels and just gives a cheaper feel but I guess they’re trying to...

    Floating Panel Movement Allowance?

Thanks gents, a moisture meter isn’t going to happen I’m afraid but that’s a link to bookmark. I think I’ll try and bring one of the panels inside for a week or so and with careful measurements see what actual movement I get and work accordingly.

    Floating Panel Movement Allowance?

I have a number of floating panels to install in a 'sort of' blanket chest. Most are 310 high by 286 wide but I have a couple at 340 wide. These are currently a smidge under 15 mm thick and will be going into 10 mm x 10 mm grooves (obviously with relieved rear faces to fit). The wood is well...

Charnwood W619 Or Axminster Craft AC216TS Table Saw

Don't disagree Nick but then they shouldn't have launched it until they had some to sell surely? I think Axminster badly dropped the ball on this one.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A fairly standard ‘cheat’ is to increase the bottom edge of the mount by a centimetre or so. This means that the frame stays as bog standard mitres but you get the visual impression from the wider mount.

    Wadkin MF restoration

As always Wallace, I enjoy your restoration threads. I love the way you take a seemingly knackered piece of junk and return it to full glory. =D> =D> =D>

    Colouring filler.

As you say you haven't got lots to do this is a very economical method. I use cheap 2 part epoxy and all manner of colourants (instant coffee is good for the odd knot hole/blemish).

    Box making hinges ...........

Meaning what exactly? Agree completely, - if you're going to market/sell something unique that others want then you absolutely must protect yourself.

    Anybody made a coffin?

From an increasingly dodgy memory I think they have to be fitted with a 'fluid proof' lining? Certainly the wicker ones have to be.

Charnwood W619 Or Axminster Craft AC216TS Table Saw

Seb, Have you thought about just the basic saw and making your own sled? I used to have a Kity 419 which was a very good basic saw (similar to the 250) but the sliding table wasn’t a massive amount of use and was easy to knock out of adjustment. Think carefully about what you want the saw to do...

    Which joint?

Thank you for the very helpful suggestions. Having spent the morning in sketchup I'm still not sure which way I will go but at least I have a number of options. Thanks again.

    Which joint?

Current lack of table saw means I'm scratching my head on how to do this with a router table. The real benefit of this type of leg (for me anyhow) comes in joining the sides/end panels. Having said that the waste of timber is excessive and caused the initial rethink. I have got an alternative...

    Which joint?

It would indeed, - but where's the fun in that? It's exactly because I don't want bog standard square legs I'm looking for something different. Not sure what you mean by hidden box joint? There will be an outer stile, it'll run parallel to the leg probably located by biscuits. At the moment...

    Which joint?

I'm in the early stages of designing a storage chest and I want to do something different for the legs instead of the usual squares. Came across the gilpin leg which has a 'fin' (reminiscent of a sabre type leg) and thought that would do what I'm looking for. The only decent images are fine...

    remote control for dust extraction

That sounds like an excellent way of doing it. How does that work with an NVR?

Charnwood W619 Or Axminster Craft AC216TS Table Saw

Seb, You can end up with analysis paralysis if you're not careful! I sold my table saw pending a downsize a few months ago and since then trying to decide if I can manage without one (I have a bandsaw and a tracksaw) but there are still times I find myself wanting to do a quick zap on a...

Charnwood W619 Or Axminster Craft AC216TS Table Saw

Seb, I have a personal bias towards Axminster because of (generally) reasonable quality (for the price) and very good back up service and away from Charnwood because of poorer quality and even poorer back up. A dished saw table (nearly 2 mm) that was apparently within tolerance! There are also...

    NVR wired out-not

Do I understand it correctly Bob that you’ve altered the extractor wiring (broke into motor live wire)? I was one of those you got grumpy with and I never bothered to explain my rationale. An NVR is there purely to prevent inadvertant reenergising in the event of external power loss. It serves...

    Electrics upgrade

I was also in the double garage conversion situation but the original supply was bog standard 2.5 mm cable and no way would it take the sort of loads I was looking to impose. Changed to 10 mm armoured with a sub board from the main board. I was having a lot of other work done at the same time...
