Which bandsaw? Help me spend my hard earned.

Gaz, I've got a startrite 352 and it truly is a beast! Purchased because like you I wanted one that I would never have to upgrade again. Current price might exceed your budget but at shows they tend to do good deals (got mine at Yandles). Haven't used it a massive amount since buying but to...

    Alternative Planer?

Yep - just had a quick look and it appears that delivery alone will wipe out any saving. As you say the warranty etc. would also be worth having so I think it's a non starter. Nice little planer though :D

    Alternative Planer?

Thanks Janos, Exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. My German is a bit rusty but the specifications look similar to the Axminster. I'll have to research the import issues but it could be the EEC actually works in my favour with the single market?

Advice please: site saw benches versus workshop versions

I think Harry has answered perfectly. If you want that accuracy then a cabinet saw is what I'd go for. I don't believe a site saw would give you the same degree of accuracy without much more fiddling (not saying you can't, just more difficult). I disagree with Janos - I've had a 419 for quite...

    Alternative Planer?

I can't believe someone is suggesting I go to a commercial retailer and 'make an offer'! I wonder how many people on this forum who would take kindly to such an approach for their services? Perhaps I may be naive but it's not something I'd feel comfortable doing (it's not a second hand car I'm...

    Alternative Planer?

I was looking to buy the Axminster CT1502 (http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ax ... rod370404/) but as it's just taken a wacking £80+ price hike I thought I'd look around a bit more. Trouble is I haven't been able to track down anything remotely similar. Lots of really big, beefy and...

    Tubular Heaters

I'm looking for a tubular heater that includes a thermostat for frost protection. So far I haven't been able to track one down. Lots of heaters and lots of thermostats but no heaters with thermostats. Anyone know of any that are of course reasonably priced?

Warning / Price hike , VAT

I was also about to place an order for a planner at £457 but due to various issues couldn't before the VAT rise only to find today that it's now £538!! At a shade over 17% that's a fair old rise. I'm trying to be generous and allow for the general rise in materials etc as well as the VAT thing...

    Condensation Hell

As someonme who is an owner of the aforesaid orange machinery what do people generally use to protect theirs? Despite a liberal application of wax I still seem to end up with problems and a discoloured slab of cast iron. Lost count of the amount of time spent with white spirit and webrax...

    Tess's Tale

The house is totally empty without them both now. It will indeed Mark and there's little that can make you feel better right now. Strange how dogs find a way to your heart. We've always taken on older recue dogs and have unfortunately been through this a number of times. Bottom of the garden...

    Sliding dovetail

Miles, Like Bob I'm struggling a bit to visualise your problem. When I cut mine I did the socket first and then the tail. Found it reasonably easy to get a snug fit although as Bob says creep up on it with shims and cuts both sides.

    Cavity wall insulation

One may laugh but how does one know when one has poly bead cavity wall insulation? When one drills a big f*** off hole for the tumble drier vent  I think the missus thought it hilarious but didn't dare laugh when she saw the look on my face trying to stop thousands of the beads...

    Cavity wall insulation

Given that it's been bloody freezing it's about time I gave CWI serious consideration. Heard some horror stories about damp after the event and having to remove the outside brick skin to take the very wet insulation out again! Am I worrying needlessly or are there things to be aware of?

Advice Please screw/nail blow out how to fix ????

You say 'just purchased' - I'd take it back and get an undamaged one. Why should you pay good money and have to fix someone elses cockups?!

    Felt drawer (box) lining

Something like copydex is quite good for this. Don't use too much or it can bleed through. Also, - if you get bored you can paint your fingers with it and peel off when dry :D

    Sorby Proedge System

Just come across this system and wondered if anyone here has any experience of it? http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/proedge.htm I've been thinking of pressing the button on a worksharp but this looks like a very suitable alternative. More expensive but perhaps a bit more versatile? Any views?

    Kity Litter

Knotty, I'd try and get one of the brass tooth ones if you can. If you replace with plastic you're bound to have the same problem again at some point.

    Kity Litter

I've had a 419 for some time and find that toothed wheel to be it's achilles heel. I change angles very carefully and make sure the wheel has disengaged from the body before trying to adjust height. P1ss poor design. A well rounded argument with NMA ("you want us to redesign the wheel?") lead...

    DRILL DOCTOR

What about brad point bits? Can they be hand sharpened? Haven't been able to find anything in relation to them.

    Woodstar Oscillating Sander

Dermot, I've got the Draper version which from memory is exactly the same apart from the badge. It's OK, does what it says on the tin. Quiet (ish) and the dust extraction works pretty well. The table is fixed and you might find this a bit limiting in the future but for what I do it's not a...
