    Is 9mm MDF 9mm?

Care to share a link? I can't see any 9 mil ones.

    Is 9mm MDF 9mm?

Thanks people, looks like the 8.5 then. Not groovers they don't!

    Is 9mm MDF 9mm?

Yes, - I know it sounds like a daft question but I also know that 6mm ply isn't 6mm (more like 5.6mm or thereabouts). I've got to cut a load of grooves and in looking for a decent slot cutter can only find 8.5mm and 10mm (wealdens). Left wondering if the 8.5 might actually be the best bet...

    Snapped screw!

Thanks Gents, Actually it isn't brass, screws came with the hinges and at a quick glance they appear to be stainless or similar. Can't believe stainless would snap so easily though. And I did put another screw of exactly the same thread in first (and it was waxed!), hence the extremely bad...

    Snapped screw!

These help? Since thought about drilling out and plugging. Probably not as strong as original but stronger than araldite!

    Snapped screw!

Fitting hinges to the flip top table and one of 12 screws has snapped leaving me with lots of swearing. I'd have kicked the cat but we don't have one! Tried removing the stub but no success so I'm left with one hinge leaf with only two screws. Thought process moves to araldite to improve...

    Grain filler

Thanks chaps, More food for thought. I do rather like that green Richard, - just have to persuade the boss it's what we want!

    Grain filler

Just approaching the final stages of a dining table (oak) and wondering whether to use grain filler or not? Not staining so a bit worried about colour matching. It would be a nightmare if it ended up looking naff because of the filler. It is a bit 'open' but in some ways I don't mind. If I do...

    Elf and safety

I think it highly unlikely that the HSE have 'banned' cars and trailers from your local quarry! Far more likely that the quarry have decided the insurance risk is to high so have decided to 'reduce' the risk by preventing access. The pedestrain separation has been an 'issue' since rhe...

    Enjoy your breakfast! (Update)

Always difficult when it's someone you care deeply about. Good luck. On a related note my missus (a nurse) is due for total hip replacement in a months time. Apparently it's now done with a spinal block instead of a GA (i.e. you are awake, if sedated, for the procedure). She is absolutely...

Nows the time and nows the hour

Not interested in the Mafell but there's a link to their Festool shop. Some of those prices are eyewateringly cheap compared to over here (says a recent purchaser of a plunge saw!).

    Energy price saving 'con'

I'm fully capable of working out when something is cheaper or not. What winds me up is this consistent 'you can save this much' when clearly that isn't true! The way comparison sites work (those I've used anyhow) tend to make the unit price/standing charges a little less easy to find to make...

looking for guidance on re-sawing with a tablesaw

Only works if you actually know the risks involved in what your assessing! So many people on this site alone ask questions on practices that could be considered 'iffy' qnd thankfully they tend to be steered towards safer methods. A+E departments get regular visits from people who thought they...

    Material for Jigs?

There is always a need to be careful with such sweeping statements as 'it's carcinogenic'. This can lead to massive and uncalled for over-reaction (e.g. mdf banned in schools). It's also worth remembering that virtually all HSE limits are based on a time weighted average (TWA) of an 8 hour...

    Energy price saving 'con'

I shop around for almost everything so I don't need the current publicity to make me keep doing it. My current (get it!) deal ends in May but I thought it useful to have a look round sooner rather than later. So off I trots to one of the comparison sites and after pumping in all the necessary...

    amusing H&S notice

I was and I have! If that sounds a bit smug I'm sorry. It was supposed to sound a lot smug :D :D :D I got truly fed up with people demanding their right to be idiots and then blaming the organisation via the usual scum sucking bottom feeders (that's the legal profession!). Now I can...

    Lidl drill

A while back they were selling 'industrial' vacuums for around 60 quid. As we were just starting major renovations at home I took a punt on it. Needless to say it took a major beasting over about six months and is still going strong. With power take of it's really useful and I have to say of...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

If you're looking to 'toughen up' the surface then you need something that's going to soak in a bit. Consider a spirit based varnish and thin down (15/20% ish). This helps the wood soak it up a bit more than normal. Couple of thinned coats then a 'normal' one to finish off. Won't make that...
