    Setting gauges for track saws

I guess the difference is between lifting the panel onto a table and lifting the panel onto a saw and then carefully guiding it through the saw to give the accurate cut you want. Also assuming you have 8 foot plus before and after the blade! I've got a decent sized table saw and a decent sized...

    Painting metal garage doors

Having finished this round of interior decs it's time to paint the garage doors. Fairly standard metal panel doors but the paint is rather old and starting to flake in some areas (galvanised underneath). Clearly a good clean down beforehand but then what product to use? Research is leading me...

    Which Vacuum cleaner

Jim, We've got a dyson cordless and found it so good we got rid of the mains powered one. And we have a shedding dog which it deals with admirably. There are drawbacks, - don't find it any good for the car but I tend to use one of the workshop vacs for that. Tools can be a bit of a pain but...

    Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

Mike, It is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) that translates the euro 'stuff' into UK legislation. As I'm sure you know an EC Directive isn't enforceable it's for the relevant country to translate into appropriate legislation. Extract from HSE site: What is work...

    Eurovision song contest?

Don't think it did at all. Norton isn't in the same league as Wogan but he 'knows the score' in relation to Eurovison. Best nights telly of the year!

    Jet JTS-600 Set Up

Ed, Where did you buy it from? I'd ask them what the tolerance is and if your 'dip' is acceptable to them. I had a similar issue with a different (clone of) saw a few years ago and ended up rejecting it because I couldn't see how I'd be able to get square cuts without major fiddling around.

    What materials and joinery...

In addition to the incredibly helpful post above ..... It depends on what I’m building and what its for. I have used quite a lot of mdf and biscuits but also solid wood and ‘proper’ joints. May also depend on whether the piece may need to be moved at some point in the future (e.g. a...

    salvaged wood

If the nails are broken off flush then I suspect no nail puller will work without a degree of 'excavation' first. Plug cutters may help although it's obviously going to depend on how deep the nail is! A number of these may help https://www.axminster.co.uk/search/?q=plug%20cutters&nR Make sure...

    Painting & Decorators

Really? You'd pay £1200 for this? I'm very well aware of the cost of 'stuff' and it's (nearly) always the labour that's the biggest element involved. How many hours work would you suggest are need to achieve the above?

    Painting & Decorators

That sounds distinctly like someone who doesn’t want/need the work but if you’re daft enough to pay he’ll do it! Fairly common practice.

Really nice bit of work, - it's good to see old timber recycled into something that'll last quite a few years.

    Porcelain tile drill bits

For porcelain floor tiles I used one of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-diam ... 0wodh1sH-w Need a good scratch mark to help start them off or they can skid a bit. Ordinary masonry drills (old/new - slow/fast) wouldn't touch 'em.

    Work Shop Insurance

I should thank you for making me go and check what cover I actually have! Fairly bog standard Direct Line policy. In the event of theft contents limit is £5K which is the maximum they do (we deliberately increased from £2.5K). In the event of fire then the overall contents cover for the...
