Axminster do comprehensive spares and have excellent customer service - what exactly is wrong with it that means it cannot be fixed? Steve.

    Slab floor

Anyone know how thin I can get away with laying a concrete slab? In my back cellar I have Victorian cobbles laid directly onto clay/earth. These are tightly packed and stable but clearly damp gets through them as they are laid on bare earth. They are as stable as a hardcore base so I was going...

WIP Comp Entry - Jewellery Box (withdrawl from comp)

Thanks for the comments. Not convinced by the curve on the legs all the way up Ironballs, if I am using a veneered panel in the centre I think the panel would also have to be curved to prevent the ground showing. Thats a bit beyond what I have the time and expertise for I think. OPJ, thanks. It...

Any H&S legal type guru's out there? Need some advice.

If it were illegal to make the cut, it would be illegal to sell the saw (or saw blade) capable of making the cut. My understanding of the situation from the 'Great British Woodshop' programme was that it is not illegal to use a dado PROVIDED the saw you use it on has been manufactured to take a...

WIP Comp Entry - Jewellery Box (withdrawl from comp)

My design brief was to design a jewellery box in two contrasting timbers with a secret compartment of some description. The design brief also stated a number of drawers or a sliding tray for storage. After sketching out a traditional box with a sliding tray however it became clear that adding a...

    Lights near windows?

Yup, if you stand between a light and the window you are visible. If you stand behind the light you are less visible. Tis what I have always been told as well - never actually tested it though! Steve.

    DT jig rant

:D I was waiting for the deluge of 'cut them by hand' posts and surprised nobody had bitten. I would love to cut them by hand. I would also love to have the time to learn to cut them by hand. Heck at the moment I don't even have time to fiddle with the jig! Its not a lack of desire, but a lack...

    DT jig rant

Huge thanks to Richard at Axminster - not only has he sent me an updated copy of the DT jig manual, he has also sent me a couple of missing handles for the cam levers FOC for the missing ones in the jig despite me purchasing it over a year ago but only now getting round to opening it. Excellent...

    Finding employment

Reads much better Hawkeye so long as you check the spelling as others have mentioned. One query - will every employer know what a PLA is? I ask only because all I know about apprenticeships is what is shown on the TV news, and I wouldn't know if there were different types of levels or schemes...

    DT jig rant

Thanks Mick, thats a useful link and I have downloaded their manual. I think I need to spend some time and do some test runs when I am not tired to get it set up right! Steve.

    Finding employment

This is not my field but I do read hundreds of letter for jobs when employing people so perhaps some of this may be relevant. Firstly, never write a letter with the salutation 'hello'. Always use Dear Sir, or if feeling you need to be PC Dear Sir/Madam. If you know the name of the MD or boss...

    DT jig rant

I had a bad day yesterday - everything I touched went wrong. Probably a bad day to open up the Axminster dovetail jig that has been sitting in the corner of the workshop for about 8 months then  First problem - no handles for turning the cam rods. Overcame that by using a screwdriver as...

    bandsaw blades

Nope - I occasionally pick up an axminster blade if I am desperate but the quality is surprisingly poor. Then slap in a dragon as soon as it arrives and ditch the axminster. I have never tried the rutlands blades. Steve.

    Supplementary Bonding (Bathroom)

Aye, don't bother. With the advent pf plastic pipe and push fit fittings it is rare to find a fully earthed house these days. I have heard people say that supplementary bonding is not a regs requirement for this reason, but am not up to speed on the latest edition so don't treat this as gospel...

    Any cyclists here?

It really depends on who you envisage on using cycle lanes. To a motorist all cyclists are the same ie slower than them. However there are vast differences in cyclists, from the lycra clad road ninja who can maintain a 25mph speed for hours on end to the stereotypical vicars wife with a bell and...

    Any cyclists here?

Generally its because all the c**p, broken glass, stones etc get pushed by vehicles into the cycle lanes. If it is rarely swept by the sweeper lorries then its tyre suicide to cycle down them. I did a 30 mile ride last weekend and part of that was down the A20 from Leeds Castle to Charing...

    Um... How clever...

Interesting - compound cutting on a bandsaw. I would have liked to see the finished piece in more detail - I suspect the quality of finish would be a little rough to say the least. The speed of cut suggests it is a very light wood as well, initial reaction was balsa wood, but possibly lime. And...

    Au pair

Not sure of the price of a Nanny / Au Pair, but would it be comparable to childcare costs? It curently costs us approx £4 per hour per child for childcare costs. Thus for a 40 hour week on a 4 week month that equates to £640 a month per child. Not sure you will get a full time person to work for...
