    Writing slope 2. Comp entry.

Maybe the photos are deceptive, but what are the dimensions for that? The timber looks fairly thick. I have always imagined writing slopes being something that you open up on your lap while sitting in a carriage or similar, bit like the modern day briefcase. Is that the idea behind your build or...

    Wall hangings

Simple and elegant, I like them! Interesting turners have been having the same conversation as scrollers. To my mind you have to try and give poeple what they want. As Gill says, detailed portraits highlight skill but are not to everyones tastes. There seems to be a massive groundswell for...

    Open letter to Axminster Despatch

Not quite sure why this is Axminsters fault though. By all means complain to TNT, but if Axminster only use TNT as a carrier you are surely shooting yourself in the foot by asking for a different carrier? Steve.

    Deft T30 Table Saw

Excellent, I have been lusting after a deft for a while so will be very interested in the review - glad you seem to like it! Steve.

    Coronation Street anyone?

I have to agree that soaps in particular are inane drivel for the non-thinking masses. They compete to have the most 'shocking' storylines or intrigue and seem to deal mainly with infidelity, violence and alcohol. Ever noticed how almost every soap has a pub as a central theme - Eastenders...

    Need advice -Employment part 2

Hate to sound like a fussy old git (at the age of 36!) but if you did that to an interview I was holding you wouldn't have got the job. Quite apart from the late arrival at interview, which would have lost you job anyway, leaving a bit of paper decrying your attendance and performance over a 2...

    Circular saw blades

One with lots of teeth :D Probably better off asking this in general woodworking to be honest as loads of people over there cut sheets with a circular saw. I tend to get mine a sheet at a time and get the woodyard to rip it into 4 2' x 4' sheets for me then just cut from there on the table...

Centre left - Tubbs from the League of Gentlemen?! Steve

    Air Fares

Hah - notice you said Poland rather than naming a city. With Ryanair the closest they can do is name the country isn't it?  Worst national carrier I have ever used is actually AirItalia - never ever take a long haul flight with them unless you have packed your hand luggage with...

    CNC - arguements please

I think there are two sides to this - a business side and a hobby side. The business side says use whatever you can to get the product to the point of sale as fast as possible without compromising quality. The hobby side says if you use a machine then you lose the skills that most of us enjoy...

I need a piece of brushed SS or Ali

Tiles on a backer board that match your wall tiles? Steve.
  12. S

Maybe because I'm a Londoner really.

=D> =D> That is impressive! Is it a static model or do the roof panels come off to access the insides for storage etc? Steve.

    Slab floor

Mainly because a sharp sand screed mix is soft and will definately shift, crack and flake without a concrete sub base. Normally I would lay sand for blinding, a DPM, 50mm of jabalite, 100mm concrete and 50mm of screed but I simply have not go the room in this instance sadly. Steve.

    Slab floor

I didn't want to ask that question Roger as I thought I would get pounced on, but you are correct: Even if the floor cracks, if it doesn't shift ie if there are no voids under the dpm does the crack matter. The concrete will not be the final surface, there will be probably chipboard panels or...

    Slab floor

Goodness, underpinning and digging down 12" seems a major job and I can't even contemplate doing that! You are starting to need structural engineers and surveys for that type of work - all I need is a floor that is flat and stops the damp coming up. Perhaps I will have a measure and see if I can...

    Silas Kopf Interview

Nice video, many thanks Gill. I have to admit to blowing hot and cold on marquetry. That fox and hens cabinet was awful, but the understated blossoms on the top side of the unfinished cabinet was pleasing from what I could see of it. The portraits, while demonstrating high levels of skill, also...

    something handy to know

TGBs round our way don't even bother to ask sometimes - anything like that is gone before you can stick a sign on it! Steve

    Slab floor

Yes, something I am considering, although not too sure how much 'spread light' a series of spots would give - there is no window light as such down there, just a small vent. Steve.

    Slab floor

Thanks guys. Relax Roger, I am not going to be digging down to excavate further - 7 tons is a bit too much earth to shift  Current headroom is about 2.3 meters. I will lose 50mm for the slab, a further 20-40mm for flooring (depending on type), 15mm for the ceiling and then there are...

    Slab floor

Thanks Kityuser, readymix is a useful website! Looks like they do a polymer addative to help prevent cracking as well, which may be useful. It will not improve structural integrity but that is not what I am after. So long as there are no voids under the slab I personally cannot see a 2" floor...
