    Wooden Castle

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, this is the first time the playroom has been clear enough of toys to snap a pic of the castle! #its a bit 'played with' so ignore the paint job - apparently it makes a good base for cars to be stored in and an alien den for Ben10 to fight aliens in...

    Compound Cutting For Beginners

Well I hesitate to post this first image given that it is so awful, and the camera makes it seem worse! But you did ask... The chess pieces were my first attempt at compound cutting some months ago and are clearly not square. Since there are no real curves its difficult to see properly what I...

    Compound Cutting For Beginners

Thanks for the advice Gill. To be honest, I think I am not running the saw at a high enough speed or alternatively turning too fast. If I tried to cut a circle in thick hardwood for example, I would end up with a cone. The blade is definately square to the table (the make a cut and put the back...

    Compound Cutting For Beginners

Many thanks Gill, I am always amazed by your skill at compound cutting. I have never managed to cut thick timbers in this manner without blade drift from the vertical. Not sure if its the blades (shouldn't be, use Mikes Flying Dutchman ones) my technique (most likely cause) my speed (also...

    Blade behaviour advice

Any blade which is deeper than it is thick will twist in a tight turn. Think of trying to turn a car round a corner in an alley the width of the car. Not possible! You can only really do this in one of two ways. The preferred method is to go to a smaller blade, which means pinless really. Some...

    architects drawing board

I always assumed they were adjustable - either via a series of notches a bit like a deckchair leg or infinetly variable by using a compression joint (locking wheel or somesuch) to lock off where you wanted the pitch to be set. Steve.

Sobering thoughts when travelling on EU roads.

Depends a bit on the sample size of trucks investigated - but for one I would say 38% of UK trucks needing work on being pulled is also unacceptably high and we should be getting our own house in order as well as putting in efforts to other countries to improve their fleets. The biggest reason...

    Spirit level ?

Stabila are supposed to be good, used by brickies all over - the longer the level the less error you will get from repeated measurements along a single long line. I was also once advised that if I was marking a long line down a wall then to flip the level each time so that if there was a small...

    Sick.

What, you mean like George Bush, or Saddam Hussain, or perhaps Stalin? All uncompromising and all (by their own definitions at least) tough warriors. Perhaps its time to value intelligence in our leaders rather than the ability to look good on camera or deliver a nice soundbite. A novel...

Help please - how to sell off cheap lots of beech etc

If it is as far south as you Wizer then I would certainly be interested in some 1" and 2" beech for a bench - about 10 cu ft or so. I havent joined the thread until now since you cannot get much further south than me without getting your feet wet in the English Channel  Steve.

    which way is best

I agree with Waka - run a dedicated 16A radial from its own MCB in the CU. Tis the only sensible way of doing it. Steve.

    Wooden Castle

I made one up for my sons - 4 towers, one in each corner, and a 'double tower' with gateway in it for the entrance. I put in a portcullis but it just slots into the entrance and lifts straight out - no clever mechanism for raising and lowering. I also put on a drawbridge but it soon got snapped...

    Schumacher returns to F1.

Hmm, mathamatically possibly, but I honestly do not think Ferrari have the car for him to do it this season. Steve.

Help please - how to sell off cheap lots of beech etc

Some idea of quantities and prices would help, failing that then let e-bay be your friend..... Steve.

    For any number freaks/saddos

And you will get 5 hours 6 minutes 7 seconds on 8th of September 2010, 6 hours 7 minutes 8 seconds on 9th October 2011, 7 hours 8 minutes 9 seconds on 10th November 2012, 8 hours 9 minutes 10 seconds on 11th December 2013. Then we run out of months and the progression has to wait until 3006...

Would you prefer to pay a forum sub....

Not exactly an unbiased poll is it Roger  Personally I have not had a problem with the ads and tend to ignore them for the most part - they are largely irrelevant to me and I have experienced no slowdown issues because of them. Define a reasonable cost for me though - given the number...

power to garage and part P

Lucky you, Swale borough council where I am are complete barstewards and seem to deliberately go out of their way to make getting planning for anything as difficult as possible. I am currently trying to get permission to replace a 3ft high front garden wall. Application in limbo because they...

beech or maple and S L hardwoods prices

Thanks Jason, not quite sure where I was going wrong but will sit down and work it out again. Wizer - not yet! I am planning my workshop cellar conversion (imminent arrival of a third child and doing the outside of the house kind of got in the way, still got a deck and pergola to do) and...
