    Another of my daft questions

I worked it out sure enough - sounds like someone I know (known as swcgafh) Only advice I can give is get your contracts in order if renting, and if sharing get an agreement written down. Good luck chum and don't let the buggers get you down.

    Chainsaw visors

Can't help with what to wear whilst turning, but I do use a chainsaw a lot (at least 20 hrs a week) and I wear one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Genuine-Stihl-Helmet-Defenders-Anti-Dazzle/dp/B0043GW6EU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388410523&sr=8-1&keywords=stihl+chainsaw+helmet I took a 3 inch...

    Firewood!

Steve, I buy it from a mate of mine who is a forester. Depending on where a bouts you are in kent I may be able to arrange for a much larger load next year, although he'll only deliver to one address. If you're up for it you can collect it from me if you have a van or pick up. Let me know.

    newbie to site and woodwork

I love the idea of becoming at peace with an absence of straight edges. I'm slowly becoming at peace with a presence of gaps around some of my joints. Gaps have a right to be there you know!!

    MDF Offcuts to give away

Although I have a wood burner in my workshop I don't really feel comfortable burning my MDF offcuts. If anyone is in Kent near Tunbridge Wells and would like some scraps/offcuts, perhaps for jig making let me know and they are all yours. If not, I'll get SWMBO to take em to the dump.

    Firewood!

Down here in Kent I buy my firewood by the 5 ton load. I pay about £26/per ton for 10ft lengths of chestnut. I get it delivered (all 5 tons) for about £50. Then it's all down to me for logging and splitting. The saying goes that burning wood warms you twice - once during the processing and once...

    Budget table saw

Personally I'd find a way to increase the budget - either wait and save, sell a kidney, whatever it takes. I struggled along with contractor saws for a while (Makita and Metabo) and found that whilst they are perfect for equalising timber joists on site and basic dimensioning of timber they are...

    Christmas Jokes

Surely ALL jokes end being at someones expense. There's a whole page of sexist jokes but no-one finds that offensive. Why are we so worried about upsetting Jews and not women? Maybe someone has some good Jewish jokes that are overtly misogynistic. That should start a conversation. Personally I...

    knife sharpening

I get my local butcher to sharpen my knives. Not 'cos I can't do it - I just like to watch him do his thing with a steel and make the 'flick flacking' sound as joethedrummer so aptly put it. It takes him about 2 minutes to get my three favourite knives (big chef knife, long whippy carving knife...

    Conifer

Pretty much all conifer wood is excellent for getting fires going when dried and split. In Canada they call it 'fat wood' I believe. We use it to get our wood burner going when things are a bit cold and damp and once lit it goes like a rocket - sometimes literally.

    Bench build question

For what it's worth.... When I built and kitted out my workshop I too desired a bench that resembled the dogs danglies. However I had neither the time nor the money to make or buy what I wanted, but I had to do something so that I could start making stuff and earning. I had two crappy old office...

    Timber ID help needed

This lump of timber has been bestowed upon me, and is going to made into a workbench. It's rock hard, very dense and very heavy, but I have no idea what species it is. Any ideas?

Glueing and cramping a table nice and square???

I use two sash cramps joined with six inch nails through the pin holes to make a long'un. Prob'ly not the best method for keeping everything square etc, but so far I've had no problems.
