I have one, quil is perfectly in line, straight and no wobble. I have clocked it to be certain. Good solid drill, easy to get spares...just buy an old drill! The chuck is on a jacobs taper and I have up graded to a keyless check by a Jacobs.

Small table for wood working, but easily fixed by making a fixture with a fence that increases the bed size to something more wood worky

My father has one too, same comments from him. For wood work I think there great. For precision metal work you may want something like a Meddings.

I have one, got it off the bay for £50 floor standing model. Bargain just badly listed. Very solid bit of kit, no play in the quill. I use it for metal work and a bit of wood. Very happy with it and better than some of the new stuff I've seen for several hundred quid.

To check for play wind the quill right down and grab the chuck. You should feel no play. (Try this on new stuff!) The only think I would have liked would have been a table that moves on a rack rather than a round column with no reference but its a minor point.

Steve take a look at The Wood Haven there is a good thread showing the restoration of a startright mercury mk11 .I bought this drill off vnv4all and although i haven't really had a chance to use it much , so far i have been really happy with it.

Cheers Bern :D

u bought that one Bern :D

£50 was a bargain porker

i am looking at nearly £200

maybe i should wait till a cheaper one comes up

Steve

To be honest I would have paid £200 as I think it stacks up well against a lot of new competition. Sure the Meddings are nice but they can attract crazy prices. I've seen people ask nearly grand for them restored!!
