Post a photo of the last thing you made

I specifically posted pictures of my extremely dull and not very good window frames to encourage others. Looks like I should've posted some of my internationally acclaimed award winning Gold Medal work instead..............if I had some. Don't be shy - we've had a bunch of onions, a door frame...

    Garage door security

If the garage isn't going to be used as a garage (i.e. - regularly opened from the outside) then the best way (and the cheapest) is to cut two bits of 4 x 2 and have them angled up to the inside top lip of the door either side. They don't need to be fixed down. Just cut the appropriate bevel on...

    Jupiter's Thunderbolt.

Yep. I was taught that one when I did my C&G about 20 yrs ago. We called it a locking scarf joint and used it mainly to extend ridge boards for roofing. I still use it - it's dead quick to cut and if you're worried about the folding wedges working loose fire in a couple of Paslode nails. Pete

    Tidying up a dingy garage.

OSB is pretty good stuff. in the construction industry it's considered to be strong enough for flat roofing so I wouldn't worry about it's strength. It's not as nice to look at as ply, and you'll never get a good smooth finish on it but if aesthetics are not your main concern it'll be just as...

    Euro locks

If you ever get locked out take a normal flat blade screwdriver (if you happen to have one in your pocket), place it in the key slot and give it a sharp whack with the heel of your hand. Then walk in. That's why they are not insurance rated - about 1 - 2 seconds from locked to open. It's...

    Ledge & brace door - erm... ?

You ain't missing nuffink! I see this all the time if I don't supervise my site chippies - they simply don't understand the purpose of the braces. It seems even the manufacturers/retailers don't get it either. There is no hope.

    York Vice - any opinions?

Thanks Ola - on that info alone I'll give it a miss.

    York Vice - any opinions?

I'm considering buying this beastie from Axi to fit to the bench I'm about to build. I've looked at the much loved Record 52 1/2 quick release hobbies on the bay and it seems that by the time I've paid shipping costs it's going to cost me either the same or more as the York model. Then I'l have...

    My first workbench build-W.I.P.-Updated

You could always add a couple of extra rails (?) across the bench under the table top for extra support while you're at it. (Running front to back). It may be a good idea to connect the legs with rails and stretchers as well. I'm not sure if that's the correct name for the pieces but I hope you...

    digital vernier caliper

I bought the Axi ones for about £24 a couple of years ago. Although they were listed as Axi's own they came in a box with Gemred embossed on it. Not that I cared really - I chose the Axi ones over the Gemred because they were £2 cheaper at the time. Use them most days and still got the original...

    Fitting skirtings

Personally I always try and convince clients to have stud work lined with 18mm OSB or cheap ply prior to plaster boarding. Fix anything anywhere then. Also makes a huge difference to rigidity and soundproofing. You don't get that 'house rattle' when the kids slam their doors!

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Ha ha! Fortunately the first floor windows are ones I installed and don't need any further work. It's just the ground floor ones that are in this state. The really embarrassing thing is that I built the extension myself and left the installation of the windows to a 'helper' whilst on holiday for...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Last sensible thing I made was this - timber surround for the appallingly fitted uPvc evil things on my own house. Before: After: The surround is made from Douglas Fir, (eventually) painted with Sikkens Rubol Plus Satura Construction is simply Dominos and Glue. That's about as good as...
