To Kent and back again. by TT

Glad you had such a good time up here in the 'Garden'. Hope you find a use for the boards - I'm sure you will. Dropping them off at Jimi's place turned into one of the most enjoyable 'quick visits' I've ever made to anybody - the tools, the coffee, Alfie, the tools, Alfie, more coffee, more...

    The UKW Infill Project

Jimi, it's an absolutely stunning piece of work and you can be confident that you've done Richard proud. I never met or knew the guy but I'm pretty sure that he'd be gobsmacked and delighted with the finished result - it's a beauty!!

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Thanks for the encouragement JJ. I've got the front half of the top in clamps at the moment - I'll carry on with it in the morning. My kids are keeping me busy at the moment so I'm not getting it done as fast as I'd like but there's something to be said for making dens and cooking sausages...

The bench build WIP. First plane! Pg4.

I prefer toad - in fact I like that so much that from now on I'm going to go with reptile names for all plane parts. I don't care if no-one else knows what I'm on about.

    My first workbench build-W.I.P.-Updated

JJ, good job I asked then - I hadn't thought about dog holes for the front jaw. I guess I'll need to rethink the front jaw thickness for mine now!! The thread that details the fitting of one of these vices is here...

I'm also interested in why you're going so thick with the jaws, as I'm about to fit my Record 53 into my bench over the next few days. I was planning on insetting the vice to allow for a 10mm thick rear jaw and then maybe 20mm or 25mm max on the front jaw. I don't want to lose too much capacity...

    What the hell is that?

    A sharpening question or two....

Thanks Lurcher, I'll nick an eraser (I was at Grammar school) from my sons pencil case and give it a go. I'll try it with the stone dry as well. Wizard, thanks for that but I was hoping to find out which of the many types of bench stones cut the quickest. I can't afford to invest in another...

    A sharpening question or two....

OK, I know this could get nasty, so flak jacket and hard hat donned here's the situation.... Firstly, I don't need advice on a method or system, so we don't need to go down that road. What I am interested to know is what type of bench stone will 'cut' the quickest. I'm currently using an Axi...

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Here's what's been going on in the Man-Cave over the last few days with the workbench: Leg frames came out of the clamps looking good - I'm always slightly nervous when I take a project out of the clamps in case it's gone all twisted or weird on me. Fortunately these were SPOT ON!! Hooray for...

A typical day in the workshop

I admire your stickability and commitment - something sorely lacking these days. Having said that I think if I had 1000 hearts to cut from ply I'd get them CNC'd - I don't think I could face the monotony. It sounds like your business is keeping you VERY busy. I also am a one man band and...

    A whopper of a chopper

Guys, I am seriously impressed with the detective work on this. You seriously RAAWK as my 10 year old would say. I think showing up at the house as described would probably mean almost certain overnight incarceration by the local plod, although I have it on good authority that local lock ups do...

    My first workbench build-W.I.P.-Updated

JJ, as I understand it (and I'm by no means an expert) the front and back edgings shouldn't present a problem in terms of wood movement - it's just the ends. However on your bench I wouldn't think it's really going to be much of a problem. If you're worried about it then you could fit the end...

    roundover bit

IN that case both hands needed. I take your point. Now that I have all the power tools I could ever need I'm starting to get wistful about hand tools....Norris Hand Plane....purrrrrr!!

    roundover bit

With a palm router your other hand is free to hold the timber.

    roundover bit

I find that using it in a palm router/laminate trimmer is quick and easy. I don't bother with it in a table - too much of a faff.

    roundover bit

I've got a 3mm round over permanently set in one of my Bosch palm routers. I do sometimes reach for the block plane instead though. Much more peaceful and less mess.

    stable door question

Just what i was going to say. Alternatively you could just cut it in half and then fix a 20mm piece (if the door is 40mm thick) to each half to form a proper rebate. Glue, screws and plugs and you'll never know the difference.

Workbench build - WIP - Almost finished and a small treat!!

Thanks Marcros. From what you've said I think that for my needs the Twin Screw is probably the best option. Mostly it will be used for holding pieces but can also be used like a wagon vice if the moveable jaw has a dog hole or two drilled into it thus allowing me to trap a board between dogs or...
